BOOK INFO: 'Philosophy is the search for the large patterns of the world and of the large patterns of experience perceptual theoretical . . . aesthetic and practical - the patterns that regardless of specific contents characterize the main types of experience. In this book I carry out my search for the large patterns of practical experience: the experience of deliberation of recognition of duties and their conflicts of attempts to guide other person's conduct of deciding to act of influencing the physical world with one's doings and the like. This is the experience that makes possible our social life the formulation of plans for teamwork the building of institutions the development of nations and the adoption of the ideal of morality. Here I develop a network of theories about the most fundamental aspects of practical thinking: what is thought in such thinking; what makes that thinking correct; what makes it practical; and the structure of the doings that accrue to the world when such thinking is effective. I have attempted to build each theory in sufficient detail so that it illuminates its subject matter with a certain degree of fullness. But I have also aimed at producing an harmonious system of theories so that the grand pattern of practical thinking can be admired not only for the beauty of the separate structures of its parts but also for its architectonic unity. Il genetista Adriano Buzzati Traverso nel 1956 aveva definì l’Università «un fossile denutrito» e, riportando i giudizi imbarazzanti di organismi internazionali sullo stato ricerca italiana, concludeva: «la nostra università è avulsa dalla vita del paese, ha una struttura interna sorpassata, e in essa aleggia ancora un’aurea medioevale». Egli riassumeva le ragioni di questa situazione in tre problematiche generali: in primo luogo, il bilancio sempre troppo magro per l’istruzione, «gran male fatto all'Italia dalla mancanza di senso di responsabilità, di coraggio civile, dal rinunciatarismo e dalla superficialità di ministri della Pubblica Istruzione, di Consigli superiori dell’istruzione, di rettori di università e di professori succedutisi durante gli ultimi quattro decenni»; in secondo luogo, il provincialismo dei professori universitari ostili all'introduzione di nuove discipline di cui non fossero esperti e di qualsiasi innovazione nell'organizzazione della ricerca; infine, la ristrettezza di vedute di una categoria imprenditoriale «gretta nelle sue visioni di rinnovamento e poco disposta ad una effettiva collaborazione con lo stato per migliorare rapidamente la situazione attuale». Tra il 1956 e il 1968, con una serie di articoli poi raccolti in volume, Buzzati Traverso aprì un dibattito sull'emergenza educativa: «Un paese che dispone di una scuola inadeguata, come indirizzo, come dimensioni e come composizione, alla civiltà e alla struttura economica verso cui il resto del mondo si sta orientando, in seguito al prepotente evolversi della scienza e della tecnica, è destinato alla rovina e al servaggio. Un servaggio meno appariscente di quelli passati […], ma ancora più umiliante, poiché esercitato a livello della cultura, per cui un tempo rifulgevamo. Ineluttabilmente, tecniche nuove, nuovi impianti, prodigiosi macchinari finiranno col venire importati anche in Italia, ma progettati, studiati, costruiti e controllati da tecnici stranieri. Ed allora i nostri figli e noi stessi saremo i paria del mondo nuovo».
