The work is divided into eighty-eight lessons structured around groups of words derived from the same root with each section supplemented with copious notes Robelo had published a work with the same title in 1911 in the Anales del Museo; and a 16 page pamphlet with a similar title appeared in 1912. Gluckman was a Colonel in the U.S. Army awarded a Silver Star during World War I and was an author of gun books. <br /> This copy includes a typed signed letter from A. E. Osborn Fort Smith Arkansas. The letter is dated August 31 1958 and is addressed to Colonel Arcadi Gluckman. The letter concerns a list of books on the Japanese Sword and a discussion of gun collections. A second ALS letter 3pp is folded and laid inside the front cover. The letter is dated January 13th 1933 and addressed to "Dear Captain" most likely Arcadi Gluckman. The letter is written on "Japanese Legation Guard Peiping China" letterhead discussing his research into Japanese swordsmiths and signed at the end by S Watanabenot legible Capt. Japanese Legation Guard. <br /> <br /> 8vo 1 195pp. Illustrated with 61 plates following the text. Recased. Custom binding with Asian bookbinder block stamp on the title page. Green cloth covered boards with green leather corners. Raised bands and gilt title on the spine. Leather has faded to brown color on the spine. Light scuff mark to the front cover and some light rubs to the leather spine. Blueish marbled end papers. Contemporary deep red English straight grain morocco gilt with gilt borders and foliate decoration to compartments. xvi; 556pp. Strong and solid hinges tight and strong some rubbing and scuffing to corners and spine ends a little darkening to the spine; internally clean and fresh plain brown endpapers old but possibly later all edges gilt half title present lavishly illustrated with 40 engraved plates some mild foxing and toning to the uncolored engravings the title page calls for 36 in color and 4 uncolored; this copy contains 35 in color and an additional uncolored plate for reasons unknown and 90 engravings in text a suite of six folio sized maps was issued to accompany the volume for an additional charge of 15 shillings but are not present here. A very good clean and attractive copy of a striking book. <br /> <br /> An anthropological study of the races of man predicated upon Prichard's assertion that there was a universal race of mankind and that differing racial characteristics originated in environmental differences rather than anything else. The work opens with a digested summary of pre-Darwinian evolutionary thought up to that point covering Lamarck Cuvier et al but aimed squarely at the scriptural conceit that all humans originate from a single genetic origin. Bastian. 13 pages of text Internally the copy is fine with very little evidence of use or of wear the plates are all in fine condition the text leaves with some evidence of old damp at the border not affecting the text wear to the portfolio covers. VERY RARE FIRST EDITION OF THIS IMPORTANT ILLUSTRATED WORK ON THE NORTHWEST COAST OF AMERICA. The wonderful lithographic panels were created with the advice and assistance of Alphons Stübel and Wilhelm Reiss who had recently published their magnificent work on the Dead Field of Ancon also with Asher. They depict the ceremonial and ethnologically and anthropologically interesting masks bowls implements and objects created by the Native American tribes of the area.<br> Captain Adrian Jacobsen was sent to the northwest coast of America for payment of 5000 RM. On instructions from Adolf Bastian he traveled from San Francisco to the west coast of North America including Arizona until 1882. The Bureau of American Ethnology originally the Bureau of Ethnology to 1897 was established in 1879 by the US government for the purpose of transferring archives records and materials relating to native Americans from the Interior Department to the Smithsonian Institution. The founding director John Wesley Powell broadened its mission to incorporate the promotion and organization of anthropological research in America. In addition to organizing field research projects the Bureau prepared exhibits for expositions collected anthropological artifacts for the Smithsonian United States National Museum acted as the official repository of documents concerning American Indians collected by the various US geological surveys including the Geographical and Geological Survey of the Rocky Mountain Region and the Geological Survey of the Territories and developed a manuscript repository library and graphics section that included photographic work. Among the Bureauís staff were some of America's earliest field anthropologists including Frank Hamilton Cushing James Owen Dorsey Jesse Walter Fewkes Alice Cunningham Fletcher John N.B. Hewitt Francis LaFlesche Cosmos and Victor Mindeleff James Mooney John Stevenson and Matilda Coxe Stevenson. Important twentieth century anthropologists included Neil Judd John Peabody Harrington a linguist who spent more than 40 years documenting endangered languages and William C. Sturtevant. The Bureau also supported the work of many non-Smithsonian researchers known as collaborators notably Franz Boas Frances Densmore Garrick Mallery Washington Matthews Paul Radin Cyrus Thomas and T.T.
