It seemed to us, that is, myself and an enthusiastic supporter of the idea, my colleague, Rosa Maria Perez, that in the year in which the achievement of Vasco da Gama would be remembered in so many ways, the "Ocean of Arrival" which held so many surprises for this Portuguese navigator and was, in turn, surprised by him, must not be forgotten. Gama's voyage should not be treated solely as a spectacular symbolic act that brought the world of the Indian Ocean to Europe and the world of Europe there, five centuries ago. Our intention, above all, was to place the commemorations in a historically correct perspective, correcting the distorted view which, practically since the beginning, has characterised Portuguese images of the East and the reading the Portuguese have given to their own activities there. In our opinion, little can be understood from the history of the Portuguese in the East, if this East - the essence of its history and culture - is not well understood. Understood, that is, from the perspective of the autonomous ways, categories, sensitivities and images of its diverse cultures. Because, afterall, it was these cultures with whom the Portuguese were confronted. It was they who dictated the reactions to our arrival and our emigration there. It was with them that our diplomacy was involved, improvising formulas unknown in the European tradition. It was them that - in the way in which they permitted the Portuguese to understand them - dictated our political, commercial, and missionary strategies. And finally, it was they who stimulated the senses and piqued the imagination, creating a cultural fascination, which has survived the disappearance of political hegemony or diminishing economic interests. … (Vorwort v.
