SOLE EDITION. 210 x 155 mm. 8 1/4 x 6". 4 p.l. 78 4 leaves.
19th century vellum-backed pink marbled paper boards smooth spine black morocco label remnants of paper shelf label at foot of spine newer endpapers. Printer's device on title page. With Greek inscription in ink on title page occasional ink marginalia and with a page of inked notes written in Latin in an early hand on blank verso of final leaf. Leaf 3r with an inexpert but endearing pen-and-ink drawing of a rider on a galloping horse below the dedication with some pencilled embellishments around it; A4r with an ink-drawn small face in one margin. EDIT 16 CNCE 23145; Gehl "Advertising or fama: local markets for schoolbooks in sixteenth-century Italy" in Costas ed. "Print Culture and Peripheries in Early Modern Europe" 2012. Corners a little bumped boards lightly chafed title page a bit soiled and browned four leaves affected by the same small burn hole a handful of words partially obscured another leaf with very small damage from ink burn-through occasional faint foxing or minor ink stains but still a pleasing copy the binding perfectly satisfactory and the interior with no major defects the historical charm of the annotations compensating for any blemishes they cause.

This is the first and only printing of a scarce textbook on rhetoric by a Perugian professor of the subject charmingly decorated and annotated by an early--not very attentive--pupil. In the 16th century the market for textbooks tended to be regional. Schools and teachers wanted works produced by local scholars and printers a preference Gehl relates to their earlier reliance on manuscripts shared and recopied by the teachers who used them. He notes that "Perugia . . . had a particularly lively market for learned books that lasted from the early days of printing right into the 17th century" and local professors were a ready resource for publishers like Andrea Bresciano.

In the present work Saxus ca. 1499-1574 a pupil of the great Perugian humanist Francesco Maturanzio 1443-1518 outlines the principles of persuasion giving examples of the various rhetorical devices and modes citing classical sources. According to Gehl our author "was an innovator . . . who made a serious attempt to facilitate learning by catering to the limited attention span of students and by including teaching tips to grammar masters." We have evidence of what he was up against in regard to the former in the doodles of a prior owner of this text who was apparently dreaming of galloping away from the classroom on a trusty if seemingly headless steed. On another page the face of a master or fellow student peers critically from a margin. But some attention was paid as shown by the notes at the end of the book.

Saxus' writings never managed to break into the major markets of Rome and Venice but continued to be printed after his death in Florence and Perugia where Gehl says "he could be considered a regional celebrity" whose former students used his textbooks to teach their own classes. We could trace just one copy of this work in auction records. ex officina Andreae Brixiani unknown

156298780Milan 1562. 1562. - Folio 12 inches high by 8-1/2 inches wide. 1-page on bifolium with a red paper seal. On the 4th leaf with the seal the letter is addressed "APRmo 5 Mons : Vescovo di Cremona". The letter realized in a secretarial hand is dated April 5 1562 from Milan and is boldly signed by Francesco Fernando dÁvalos d'Aquino d'Aragona.
Philip II King of Spain and Duke of Milan chose Francesco Fernando dÁvalos to be his envoy at the Council of Trent. He arrived in Trent on March 14 1562 and attended the sessions of the council. He pressed the Spaniards to not offer up anything against the interests of the Holy See. Upon his return to Milan he charged his secretary Ercole Pagnano with the task of generating a report. As the Governor's agent Pagnano had defended the privileges of the Sicilian monarchy and worked with the Spaniards to quell the controversy regarding the jurisdiction of bishops. In this letter to the Bishop of Cremona the Governor is offering Pagnano's report to him. Loosely translated he states that Pagnano is well informed about these things and that "V.S." Your Excellency should be given his account.
The letter was once folded into 4 panels and there very minor breaks along 3 of the folds. There is some minor browning especially to one of the folds.
An advisor to King Philip II of Spain Francesco Fernando dÁvalos c.1530-1571 took command of the Spanish army in Lombardy and Piedmont succeeding the 3rd Duke of Alba who had become the Governor of Milan. From 1560 to 1563 Francesco Fernando served as the Governor of the Duchy of Milan. He was the viceroy of Sicily from 1568 to 1571.
The Bishop of Cremona was born Niccolo Sfondrati in 1535 in the Duchy of Milan. Philip II of Spain appointed him to be a senator in Milan in 1552 and at the urging of the Spanish government the Pope appointed him Bishop of Cremona in 1560. He participated in some of the sessions of the Council of Trent from 1561 to 1563. In 1590 he was one of seven cardinals that were acceptable to be pope by Philip II of Spain. He was elected Pope and took the name Gregory XIV. He died less than a year later in October 1591. Milan, 1562. unknown

Hand colored engraving light foxing and soiling paper thinned in upper margin from prior mounting.

It reads translation from Discovering the New World Based on the Works of Theodore de Bry Harper & Row 1976: As can be seen from the preceding illustrations this area abounds with very agreeable little islands. The rivers are not deep; the pure clear water scarcely reaches the chest. When the Indians want to make an enjoyable excursion with their wives and children they go to these islands. They either swim across the river for they are excellent swimmers or they wade across carrying the little children. In fact the mothers can manage three children at once the smallest on a shoulder clutching its hand and the other two under her arms. With the free hand the women carry a basket full of fruit or other food for the occasion. For fear of meeting enemies the men carry bows and arrows. In order not to wet them they attach the quiver to their hair and hold the bows stretched and ready with and arrow prepared instantly to defend themselves as can be seen in our engraving.
