Very good. - Small quarto 7 inches high by 5-3/8 inches wide printed self-wraps removed by a previous owner from a larger collection of pamphlets. 11 pages plus 1 blank with a decorative rule above the first page of text. The edges of the title & the rear blank are slightly darkened & there is some light staining to the title. The bottom corners of the last 3 leaves are creased. Very good. <p>An impassioned denunciation of the French for their execution of Louis XVI. The French king was killed in December 1792. The text is in Spanish.<p>Jean Charles de Coucy 1746-1824 was a refugee in Spain during the French revolution 1792-1814. He was made bishop of La Rochelle in 1789 but because of his strongly pro-monarchical views he was soon exiled to Spain where he resided in Guadalajara. In 1801 he refused the Pope's request for his resignation thus contributing to a schism in the lower church. He became one of the "refractaires". In 1803 Napoleon Bonaparte asked the King of Spain to have him arrested whereupon he was imprisoned until 1807. He returned to France in 1816 and was made Archbishop of Rheims the following year.<p>Rare. WorldCat and KVK locate only one copy worldwide. 178894952December 8 1788. 1788. Very good. - Over 45 words penned on 9-1/4 inch high by 7-1/4 inch wide creamy white watermarked paper. Apparently only one page of a longer letter likely missing an attached leaf from what is claimed by the endorsement on the verso to be a letter of recommendation. Only the closing lines and sentiments are present. "Lady Clifden presents her best compliments to you and adds her wishes to mine to see you once more in good health & spirits in this old Castle." Signed "Clifden". "Brig. Gen. Clarke" is penned in darker ink in a contemporary hand next to the Viscount's signature. A few letters are smudged including the first letter in Viscount Clifden's signature. The letter is folded for mailing with ink annotations centered on the verso indicating that the letter was penned by Lord Clifden on December 8 1788 and received nearly a year later on September 1st 1789. The letter is additionally identified as "Recommending Mr. ". There are remnants of gray paper adhering to one edge of the verso indicating that the letter was once mounted. Very good. <p>The Irish peer & politician James Agar 1st Viscount Clifden 1734-1789 was a Member of Parliament for Gowran. He together with William Ponsonby 1st Baron Ponsonby held the post of joint Postmaster General of Ireland from 1784 to 1789. December 8, 1788. unknown

Full contemporary brown calf with a gilt titled red leather label and floral decorations in gilt between raised bands on the spine. The covers are rubbed and scuffed with wear to the edges and corners. The head of the spine is chipped with a small piece out adjacent to the rear joint. 518 & 5 pages with decorative head & tail pieces and initials. An early owner's name is penned on the title page. There is occasional minor soiling and evidence of early worming to the front edge of the last 2 leaves of text rear blank and endpaper. Good. <p>The French bishop and theologian Jacques Benigne Bossuet 1627-1704 was renowned for his sermons and considered one of the most brilliant orators of all times. A strong advocate of political absolutism and the divine right of kings Bossuet was the court preacher for Louis XIV. Contained within this work are his three great orations delivered at the funerals of Queen Henrietta Maria who was the widow of the English king Charles I in 1669 that of her daughter Henriette Duchess of Orleans who passed away a year later and the French military commander le Grand Conde in 1687. The half-title is detached with a few short tears to the edges. There are 2 short tears to the bottom edge of the leaves throughout. A good clean copy of this pamphlet and well worth binding. <p>The first edition in English. This work was translated from the German edition published without the author's knowledge as "Ein Wort eines freyes sic Schweizers an die Franzosische Nation.".<p>Subsequent to the French Revolution France sought by force to impose its new system of government on its neighbors. Lavater chides the French representatives for their hostile actions in Switzerland. Applauding the principles of "Liberty Equality and the Rights of Man" Lavater tellingly signs the work in print at the end "In The First Year of Swiss Slavery".<p>The Swiss theologian Johann Caspar Lavater was the author of the significant work of "Essays on Physiognomy".<p>Scarce.
