Incomplete binding up a small section of the complete work - 30 plates along with 2 title pages and table the last section of 6 plates from Abrege de l'Histoire Sacrée. Mostly very light dampstain in the inner margin of the first half - quite attractive and engraved throughout on recto only. The complete work is rare complete and had over 200 plates and was issued in parts this comprises plates 1-6 of parts 1-3 of Abrege de l'Histoire Universelle along with 1-6 part 1 of Sacrée along with 7-12 of part 2. Durosoy recommande également la morale par l'exemple et le respect par les parents, de la personnalité de l'enfant. Comme beaucoup de traité de l'époque les recommandations nous paraissent de nos jours ambivalent, sinon ambiguës: "Point de familiarité, point de caresses minaudières..." mais si Durosoy interdit le jeu avec les enfants pour qu'il n'y ait pas égalité entre les parents et eux, il recommande, très en avance sur son temps, l'égalité des soins et d'éducation pour les enfants infirmes et annonce ce qui sera plus tard le concept de projection: "trop souvent, hélas ce sont ses torts, ses propres torts qu'on punit dans les enfants...". Dos plats ornés, pièces de titre et de tomaison de maroquin rouge.L’édition originale de ce traité d’éducation conçu sous forme épistolaire par Madame de Genlis alors préceptrice des enfants des enfants du duc de Chartres. A la suite de la publication de L’Émile de Rousseau, en 1762, Madame de Genlis, rousseauiste elle-même s’emploie à écrire ce roman épistolaire, fruit, dit-elle de quinze ans de réflexion. Le traité est immédiatement un vif succès et fut mainte fois réédité jusqu’au XIX° siècle. La nécessité de donner accès à la connaissance, tant aux sciences qu’au monde des lettres, doit s’adressé tant aux filles qu’aux garçons. Il faut que les enfants aient une éducation précoce, pétrie de sentiments religieux et de morale, tout en restant ouverte sur le monde. Bel exemplaire en veau moucheté de l’époque.
