Unbound self-wraps with stab marks along the left edge and numbers penned in an early hand at the top right corner of each page. 3 pages on attractive watermarked paper with a handsome engraved pictorial headpiece at the head of the first page. There is offsetting to the top front corner of the first leaf and some light creasing. Very good. <p>Signed in print "Louis. Et plus bas Par le Roi Guignard."<p>On August 26 1789 France's National Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen which declared that "Men are born free and equal in rights. Social distinctions may be founded only upon the general good." Although the articles did not specifically address the abolition of the nobility the Assembly took up the subject in their subsequent June 19 1790 meeting which declared the abolition of hereditary titles.<p>SCARCE. Two volumes bound as one: Preface with Errata Review and Part I paginated viii 59 232; Part II paginated 1 - 210. 4to. Handsomely bound in full contemporary polished calf. The leather boards show a few spots of scuffing which could probably be polished out. The spine is heavily ornamented in gilt. The endpapers appear to have been renewed some time ago: they are tight and unmarked. Contents exceptionally clean with very little foxing. Overall a very nice presentation in excellent condition. Sir John Dalrymple 1726-1810 was a Scottish advocate judge chemist and author. He is best known for this work first published in 1771. He was educated at Edinburgh and Cambridge universities and admitted to the Faculty of Advocates Scottish Bar in 1748. The research for this book came about at the instance of the historian and philosopher David Hume who had requested Dalrymple to carry out research in the French state achives. Dalrymple made a number of significant dicoveries including confirming that the Secret Treaty of Dover did contain a provision that Charles II would convert to Roman Catholicism and that the Whig martyr Algernon Sidney had accepted money from Louis XIV in 1678 and that William Russell Lord Russell had negotiated with the French monarch. Although Hume later scoffed at Dalrymple's discoveries they were approved of by Samuel Johnson and later historians. Maurice Ashley commented that the publication of the Memoirs was 'a striking change in the historiography of the revolution' and J. P. Kenyon has said that the 'careful and accurate transcripts he published . of key documents have been a boon to other historians right down to the present day.'. W. Strachan and T. Cadell unknown

The overlapping edges are slightly darkened and creased with a small chip torn from the bottom edge of the last leaf not affecting the text. Good. <p>An impassioned speech by Dorfeuille addressed to the soldiers of the French republic in the early days of the French Revolution inspiring them to confront the foreign enemies who have aligned themselves with the aristocracy and to seek to inspire the soldiers of other countries to join with them and recognize the people of France as their friends in opposition to the despots who command their regiments.<p>According to Vingtrinier in the "Catalogue de la Bibliotheque Lyonnasie de M. Coste" 1853 this new edition was printed after the death of "Chalier de Pelletier et de Marat". The date and place of publication were attributed to Bourg 1793 by Sirand in the "Bibliographie de l"Ain" 1851.<p>"Nouvelle Edition" with the lyrics to the "Chanson de Dubois-Crance". Athough the title attributes the song to Edmond Louis Alexis Dubois-Crance the lyrics are said by others to have been written by Adrien-Simon Boy the chief surgeon for the Army of the Rhine. The first line reads "Veillons au salut de l'Empire" and the song became the unofficial French national anthem under Napoleon. A precursor to "La Marseillaise" the lyrics were sung to the melody "Vous qui d'amoureuse aventure courez et plaisirs et dangers" which was sung in Nicolas Dalayrac's comic opera "Renaud d'Ast".<p>The French actor playwright and revolutionary Antoine Dorfeuille 1754-1795 performed in "boulevard" theaters after 2 unsuccessful attempts to join the Theatre-Francais. He performed as part of the Charles de Lorraine's troupe in 1775. In 1777 he became the first player in the company of Ghent where he had the opportunity to stage his own plays. Seduced by the Revolution he penned numerous patriotic sketches from 1789 on. As a Jacobin missionary Dorfeuille traveled throughout France's western region reading from his anti-clerical and anti-aristocratic works including "Miracle of the Holy Omelette" "The Magic Lantern patriotic or coup-de-grace to the aristocracy" etc. Joining the revolutionary forces he served in various capacities fighting with the Montagnards in 1793. Serving in Corsica he returns to the continent to join up with Dubois-Crance. Back in Paris he is enthused by Marat & Hebert. As a journalist and propagandist he writes under the pseudonym "Damane". Like many others though a "sans culottes" he is accused by some of supporting the municipal officers of Bourg whom he vows to defend before the revolutionary tribunal. Following the fall of Robespierre he is arrested despite support from many on the Committee of General Securiy and detained at the Roanne Prison. He is murdered during the May 4th 1795 massacre.<p>The French soldier and politician Edmond Louis Alexis Dubois-Crance 1747-1814 was a musketeer and subsequently a lieutenant of the Marchaux the guardsmen of the Ancien Regime. Elected a deputy by the Third Estate of Vitry-le-Francois he joined the National Assembly. Named Secretary in the Constituent Assembly Dubois-Crance sought to replace the old military system which was based on the aristocratic system with an organization of National Guards formed by the citizenry and he supported conscription. He was elected to the French Republic's National Convention by the Ardennes department and sided with "The Mountain". Named president of the Convention in 1793 he was a member of both general defense committees before the Reign of Terror established the Committee of Public Safety. His report on the state of the Revolutionary Army recommended the rapid advancement of lower officers based on their success and the fusion of the volunteer troops with those of veterans. These measures contributed to the later success of the army. He participated in the Thermidor Coup that overthrew Robespierre in 1794 but did not join the Royalist faction and as one of the Committee of Five he opposed the October 1795 Royalist insurrection. A member of the Committee of Public Safety he was a member of the Council of Five Hundred. Dubois-Crance was appointed Inspector General of infantry and subsequently minister of war in 1799. He opposed Napoleon's coup d'etat and lived in retirement during the years of Napoleon's empire.<p>RARE. [Bourg, France]: [1793]. paperback
1715100957<p>Colorno October 12 1715. 1715. Fine. - Over 240 words penned in a secretarial hand on 10-7/8 inch high by 16-5/8 inch wide creamy laid paper. Loosely translated from the Italian the document proclaims "Whereas Mr. Giuseppe Antonio Piazza from Bressanone a Knight of illustrious blood having practiced wise conduct in serving us in the quality of a Page and being now obliged to return to his homeland it merits that we accompany him with the present letter by virtue of which calling ourselves fully satisfied with the service rendered us we also wish to give him some sign of our satisfaction and to assure him of our good will which we shall preserve for him at all times and in all places. With these feelings therefore we declare the same Mr. Giuseppe Antonio Piazza our Attendant and Familiar. and should he need to travel allow him always to pass freely with his servants belongings arms and equipment because we thus expressly command." Dated "12 Oct. 1715" and signed "Francesco Farnese". A paper seal over the Duke's red wax seal adorns the document at bottom left. The document is folded several times with some staining to the folds. In surprisingly fine condition.</p><p>The penultimate Duke of Parma and Piacenza Francesco Farnese 1678-1727 married his brother's widow Dorothea Sophia of the Palatinate to avoid returning her dowry. He cut back on the enormous court expenditures which his father Ranuccio II had accumulated. Francesco adopted a policy of neutrality in an attempt to keep foreign troops out of Parma during the war between France & Austria. However Prince Eugene of Savoy occupied parts of Francesco Farnese's territories and though he was promised reparations by the Austrian Emperor Leopold I Leopold's son Joseph I disregarded this promise and declared Parma a fief of the Duchy of Milan. His inability to produce children lead to the accession of Don Carlos the son of his niece the Queen of Spain.</p> Colorno, October 12, 1715.
