16666Women Education Medical School Photo archive of women students at Duke University School of Medicine Class of 1950. Consist of 23 original Gelatin silver print black and white photos. 3 x 4 ¼ inches. c. 1940s-1950. Images show students at work in blood banks in labs studying and relaxing between classes. Includes photos of school buildings such a the Medical School entrance in addition to several instructors. Some include handwritten captions giving a little more information such as a picture of the "Class of 1950" with 8 women and 1 man identified: "Bev Helen Belle Monkey Noni Ann Betty Joann Bill". Other captions include names of doctors instructors fellow students and the type of work being done in images such as "Bev - vaccine" and "Beth Bueliner - Blood Bank". Other photos identify the subject as the Media Lab Chemistry Lab working with EKG and studying Hematology blood. Students outside of medical school entrance. Photos of a quick break grabbing a coffee and snack of animal crackers.

Although women had participated in the informal practice of medicine for hundreds of years there were relatively few women studying medicine in the United States at this time. By 1900 only about a dozen medical schools had opened to coeducation and female graduates often found themselves unable to access training hospitals and professional associations. The trailblazing young women in these photos whom we see performing experiments and examining patients bucked the trend of their generation to become doctors. Early images of women in medicine are very rare and a fine addition to a collection. Very good condition. unknown books

1959List920New York: NAACP 1959. Poster on heavy card stock 13 x 10 inches. Some foxing to edges near fine condition overall. Near Fine. In 1959 to commemorate the fifth anniversary of the Brown vs. Board of Education decision the NAACP coordinated a group of celebrations in churches throughout the country to celebrate Freedom Sunday. The effort led by Reverend Edward J. Odom Jr. the NAACP church Secretary involved over 100 local chapters across the country. The celebrations on May 17th were a part of a larger coordinated campaign by the NAACP to register voters raise funds and engage in desegregation projects. Coverage in the mainstream press was scant with several short articles on the celebrations appearing in a range of states including Michigan Alabama and Indiana.

We find no other record of this poster promoting the event which was produced in New York and can't confirm whether it was distributed to local chapters. Overall a visually striking poster commemorating both the landmark court decision and the role that the church would play in the Civil Rights movement in general. NAACP unknown books
1682046918Dublin: Joseph Ray 1682. Second Edition. Hardcover rebound in leather. Very Good Condition. Rebound in contemporary leather extensive contemporary notes to front endpapers one endpaper with the upper right corner torn. Quite clean internally - in two parts a third was published in 1689. 14 70 8 154pp

The first and second parts of Ware's extensive and pernicious forgeries of church history intended to stir up anti-Catholic anti-Irish and anti-Jesuit sentiment. They played a large role in the absurd stories surrounding the Popish Plot and many of Ware's creations continued to pollute reformation history into the 19th 20th and even 21st centuries. Ware was the son of a prominent historian and used his father John's name to legitimize the documents that he "found" - one of the most long lived forgeries was a Cranmer letter at the beginning of part two which entered into Cranmer's works and was preserved for centuries through misattributions by historians such as John Strype and wishful thinking.
