Original silver gelatin print 2.75 x 2 in. This young student wears a dark pinafore uniform and a fashionable hat and looks confidently out at the viewer. This was mere months after Bulgaria declared entered World War I in October 1915. Normal education was disrupted for most Bulgarian students during the Balkan Wars 1912-1913 and WWI 1915-1918 so this girl was likely very grateful for the opportunity to study. Hume of Bristol.<br/><br/>"One academic subject that was consistently considered important for both boys and girls after reading writing and arithmetic was geography. Geography was considered a science at this time and . it was the first science taught to girls in the US . Many girls were taught to read but not write. With the exception of some diaries or letters or of marginalia there is little to tell us how children learned to read do arithmetic or write. Original blue cloth board covers. 58 Gelatin silver print black and white photos of various sizes from 2.5 x 3.5 in. to 5.5 x 4 in. Follows a class of girl students over the course of 7 years.<br/><br/>Album kept by schoolteacher of the students at All Saints Girls' School in London. Inscription on inside front cover: "From 1931- Recording many happy hours with All Saints . Candidates Central Islington." Begins with "The Original Class" and identifying class leaders including one small child identified as "Baby". In 1935 identified as the "Jubilee Year" celebrating 25 years of King George V students had photos taken in Kensington Garden while performing a "Jockey Dance" and national dances for England Ireland Scotland and Wales. Children are dressed up in the garden as a "gypsy" jockey and "butterflies and elves." There are also pictures of girls in short dresses posing as part of the Skipping Team. In other images students wear plaid skirts ties and hats while performing a "Scotch Dance"; they also wore special costumes for different dances such as the "Mountain March" the "Shoe maker" and "Cochin-China". Includes note on what the girls were wearing for each yearly photo: "Blue and white check dresses with white collars & cuffs" and 1937 Coronation Year King George VI / Red white & blue dresses". Photographs of various small sizes from 1.75 x 2.5 inches to 3 x 5". Many images are school portraits of teenage girls in their matching uniforms posing either individually in pairs or small groups. Occasional photographs of teenage boys as well including one with the sitter dressed in a samurai outfit. Photos of a field day with outdoor footraces marches and performances. A few later photographs of older young women in civilian clothes posing by a river and strolling in a park together. These may be images of some of the younger students years later as adults. Most of the images show figures in Western styles clothes although 2 photographs show women dressed up in kimonos. Images lack captions but there is an autograph on one photograph. He was conscious to the last and was grateful to everyone. He had little acute pain. He lay all night in peace and died in the morning."Charles Dickens: "The boy Charles was not strong but nevertheless before he was ten years old he was obliged to earn his own living. He was placed in a blacking warehouse an old ramshackle house near the Thames. The scenes in which he was brought up were the most degrading ones possible.During this time he spent much of his time in the reading room of the British Museum.In 1842 he made his first trip to America. A memorabilia recording many aspects of the first major movement of women's education in the United States brings depth to a movement that was groundbreaking in its time but today is largely at risk of disappearing from the historical record. 24 entries in various hands dated 1853-1862. Memory albums held autographs sentiments and reminiscences of friends and schoolmates similar to yearbooks today. "To Hettie Oh! do not say Farewell We we are going to sever Tis like sudden passing bell of Friendship gone forever. Oh seek some other language than the mournful truth to tell Say parting friends may meet again but do not say farewell." Rare first and sole edition of this treatise on the proportional compass written by the Jesuit Giovanni Marchelli. The work was expressly written for the use of Marchelli's mathematics pupils in the Jesuit College of Milan and thus provides interesting evidence for the use of scientific instruments in Jesuit education. The text offers an advanced understanding of Galileo's landmark instrument and coming from a Jesuit it is perhaps notable that Galileo's "invention" of the instrument is so candidly celebrated. The proportional compass or 'sector' in fact combines two separate instruments one for making observations by adding a quadrant to its arms the other to calculate various measures like proportion trigonometry and squares and cube roots. Its several scales permit easy and direct solutions for problems in surveying gunnery and navigation. Conceived as a universal instrument the device was adapted for a variety of pedagogical purposes far more diverse than Galileo's sector ranging from pure geometry to such practical operations as taking measurements for the architectural orders p. 11 converting currency and calculating interest p. 42 performing various 'rule-of-three' operations such as the dissolution of business partnerships p. 53 surveying passim and the construction of Napier tables p. 73. The compass scales are well illustrated and the text includes tables giving the positions of the various markings. The large folding plate provides diagrams "for constructing Galileo's quadrant" that show with great refinement exactly where the markings on the quadrant's arm and tangent are to be engraved. An extensive collection of autographs notes and well-wishes from classmates at a boarding school for young ladies. <br/><br/>Women's colleges proliferated in the mid- to late- 19th century to fill the void created by their exclusion from most institutions of higher education. The prevailing notion that women were too delicate for a rigorous academic education was openly challenged when Elizabeth Cady Stanton spoke at the Seneca Falls Convention of 1848 "Man's intellectual superiority cannot be a question until woman has had a fair trial.When we shall have had our colleges our professions our trades for a century a comparison then may be justly instituted."
