Front pastedown with bookplate of the Fox Pointe Collection. Wing P-2842B; ESTC R207754. ◆Text lightly washed and pressed but still crisp faint foxing to lower edge of title page otherwise a fine fresh copy in an unworn binding.

Written by an opinionated English cleric this is an extraordinarily rare pamphlet proposing an unusual fund to support young 17th century scholars. According to DNB the scheme outlined in the present work was meant "to support the university studies of young men of promise seeking entry into the ministry." The plan "was approved by John Worthington and Anthony Tuckney and had the support also of John Arrowsmith DD Ralph Cudworth William Dillingham DD and Benjamin Whichcote. The fund raised about £900 and it appears that William Sherlock afterwards dean of St Paul's received assistance from this fund during his studies at Peterhouse Cambridge until 1660 when he graduated BA. Those entrusted with administering the fund sent Poole regular reports on students interviewed and the ratings they had received in philosophy logic and languages. The scheme was abandoned at the Restoration." Poole 1624 - 79 was the author of a number of controversialist pamphlets on subjects ranging from Unitarianism to preaching by lay persons before undertaking his major work: a synthesis of critical biblical commentaries "Synopsis criticorum aliorumque sacrae scripturae interpretum." This is one of his scarcest writings: ESTC lists seven copies two in North America while ABPC and RBH record just two copies at auction. s.n. Printed Anno Domini unknown

16881251publisher not identified London 1688. First Edition. Softcover. Very Good Condition. Pamphlet A contemporary collection of documents chronicling King James II’s attempt to change Magdalen College of Oxford University into a Roman Catholic institution. When the presidency of the college became vacant the protestants elected John Hough to take the position but James ordered the fellows to elect a Catholic Anthony Farmer as their president. J. R. Bloxam expanded the collection in his Magdalen College and King James II 1686-1688 1886. In the introduction he describes James’ actions in the conflict as “an overt and undisguised step towards opening the chief seminaries of the Church of England to Roman influences and occupation†p. viii. Although there is no editor named the binder’s label on the front cover attributes it to Henry Fairfax who is often named as the likely editor. Fairfax’s biography in the Dictionary of National Biography 1885-1900 however reports the editorship “is usually claimed for Charles Aldworth vice-president of the college†p. 135. The royal order suspending Aldworth and Fairfax from Fellowships at the college is provided on p. 13. Other claimants include John Hough and Francis Bagshaw. Size: 7.5"-8" - Small Octavo Sm. 8vo. 40 pages. Item Type: Pamphlet. The text block is tight and unmarked. The paper is tanned but remains supple. Rebound in a blue paper wrapper with silver floral decorations and title on label pasted to the front cover. The pamphlet has been glued onto new end papers which are in turn glued into the wrapper. His own experience must have provided a context for his advice. According to the entry on Mayne in the 1911 edition of Encyclopedia Britannica he was a graduate of Christ Church Oxford and had two college livings in Oxfordshire but was disposed during the Commonwealth. At the time of this address two years after the Restoration he had himself been restored to church offices.
