156298780Milan 1562. 1562. - Folio 12 inches high by 8-1/2 inches wide. 1-page on bifolium with a red paper seal. On the 4th leaf with the seal the letter is addressed "APRmo 5 Mons : Vescovo di Cremona". The letter realized in a secretarial hand is dated April 5 1562 from Milan and is boldly signed by Francesco Fernando dÁvalos d'Aquino d'Aragona.<p>Philip II King of Spain and Duke of Milan chose Francesco Fernando dÁvalos to be his envoy at the Council of Trent. He arrived in Trent on March 14 1562 and attended the sessions of the council. He pressed the Spaniards to not offer up anything against the interests of the Holy See. Upon his return to Milan he charged his secretary Ercole Pagnano with the task of generating a report. As the Governor's agent Pagnano had defended the privileges of the Sicilian monarchy and worked with the Spaniards to quell the controversy regarding the jurisdiction of bishops. In this letter to the Bishop of Cremona the Governor is offering Pagnano's report to him. Loosely translated he states that Pagnano is well informed about these things and that "V.S." Your Excellency should be given his account.<p>The letter was once folded into 4 panels and there very minor breaks along 3 of the folds. There is some minor browning especially to one of the folds. <p>An advisor to King Philip II of Spain Francesco Fernando dÁvalos c.1530-1571 took command of the Spanish army in Lombardy and Piedmont succeeding the 3rd Duke of Alba who had become the Governor of Milan. From 1560 to 1563 Francesco Fernando served as the Governor of the Duchy of Milan. He was the viceroy of Sicily from 1568 to 1571.<p>The Bishop of Cremona was born Niccolo Sfondrati in 1535 in the Duchy of Milan. Philip II of Spain appointed him to be a senator in Milan in 1552 and at the urging of the Spanish government the Pope appointed him Bishop of Cremona in 1560. He participated in some of the sessions of the Council of Trent from 1561 to 1563. In 1590 he was one of seven cardinals that were acceptable to be pope by Philip II of Spain. He was elected Pope and took the name Gregory XIV. He died less than a year later in October 1591. Milan, 1562. unknown

Early edition of this omnibus of foundational works in women's education. The individual texts brought together in this publication were all wildly successful and went through multiple editions in both Europe and the United States. While "conduct books" aimed toward's women's self-improvement became popular in the mid-19th century this edition is remarkable for encouraging rational understanding and free thought in young women through a proper education Chapone as well as defending a woman's right to follow her conscience over blind obedience to marriage vows or social codes Pennington who divorced her husband and was cut off from her children. This illustrated edition of Mrs Hester Chapone's conduct book. Written for her niece who was 15 years old at the time. Throughout the letters Chapone encourages rational understanding through reading history and literature. She explicitly states that sentimental novels are to be avoided. With four illustrated plates and an illustrated title page. The topics discussed range from economy government politeness religion as well as the heart and affections. Chapone's Letters were written when the popularity of advice or conduct books were at its peak. It had over 28 editions printed and first editions are extremely rare this is an early edition. including a French translation. in very good condition. unknown

1845List2951Brooklyn New York 1845. Single three-page letter measuring 7 ¾ x 9 ¾ inches. Folded with very small tears at folds and tear at seal; near fine. A letter from A. M. Stone to George Capron and the Sigma chapter of Psi Upsilon at Brown University. Psi Upsilon was founded in 1833 at Union College in Schenectady New York and the Sigma chapter started at Brown in 1840. Stone signs his letter with “Gamma Zeta†indicating that he could be writing on behalf of the Amherst or Dartmouth College chapters. His main concern is that the “Psi Ups†are getting too comfortable “so nearly at perfect rest that the inspiration appears to have died away in great measure.†He mentions a rivalry with Delta Phi another Union College-founded fraternity; noting that while “I do not think they can injure us . they may do us good by raising up an healthy oppositionâ€. He also mentions conflict with the Delta chapter of Psi Upsilon at New York University with whom “there is evidently discord . manifested in various ways each chapter striving for the mastery instead of uniting forces to certain victoryâ€. An 1867 document confirming the receipt of $1000 for building a school for freed African Americans in Morganton North Carolina. The document reads:<br /> <br /> “$1000<br /> Morganton N.C.<br /> Dec’r 16th 1867<br /> Received of Major Hannibal D. Norton Sub-ass’t Com’r Bureau R.F. A.L. One Thousand dollars in full for erecting a School-building on land purchased by Freedmen in Morganton N.C. as per contract dated August 31 1867.<br /> Check No. 1135 on Raleigh Nat B’k<br /> for $1000.00 signed by Bt Lt Col J. A. Claywell / Jesse Strabo Nelson<br /> T. P. Johnson C.Q.M. D.O. S.N.C.â€<br /> <br /> Brevet Lt. Col. Thomas P. Johnson appears in other North Carolinian Freedmen’s Bureau documents; the abbreviation after his name likely stands for Chief Quartermaster and Disbursing Officer State of North Carolina. The two witnesses Claywell likely James Addison and Nelson were both active in the Methodist church; Claywell was superintendent of the Morganton Methodist Sunday School and Nelson a Methodist reverend. Neither man’s obituary mentions any involvement with the Freedmen’s Bureau.<br /> <br /> The school is not identified by any name but is mentioned in a March 1868 report by Hannibal Norton the Freedmen’s Bureau agent. The building was located at Union and Water now Bouchelle Streets and hosted three schools day night and Sabbath; had one teacher an African American man named Joseph Nicholas; and was paid for by the students’ parents. The report describes difficulty in raising money to pay for more buildings teachers and books and notes that “The public sentiment is adverse to the education of Freedmen and Poor Whites.â€1 Given the area’s poverty indicated by Norton’s report the fundraising by formerly enslaved people to buy land for the school must have taken remarkable effort and sacrifice—education was a critical cause for African Americans and significant progress was made during Reconstruction in spite of poverty and violent backlash.<br /> <br /> 1 “North Carolina United States records†images FamilySearch https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-C9TC-6PJVview=explore image 104 of 567; United States National Archives and Records Administration.
