Some toning wear. Generally very good. <br/><br/>Archive a student who received his BS MA and PhD at Peabody as well as that of his wife who also graduated from Peabody with a BS. The couple were both heavily involved in the school members of numerous social organizations and active in student government he was president of the senior class of '26. The promotional material in the collection shows that the college which had reorganized and opened a new campus directly across from Vanderbilt University in 1914 was in the midst of major construction and expansion projects during this time; many pieces show photographs and renderings of new or planned buildings. The college at that time the largest teachers' college in the South was incorporated into Vanderbilt in 1979. Scrapbook documents Hinshaw's life from infancy to adulthood. Hinshaw was an active and popular student. Comes with membership card for Delta Sigma Epsilon Sorority; party invitations and dance cards from Sigma Tau Gamma Delta Sigma Epsilon and Alpha Delta. Page 7 features small cutouts of women's portraits arranged in a "23" configuration likely containing images of all members of the class of 1923. Georgia State College for Women was founded in 1889 as the Georgia Normal & Industrial College as a women's institute; and in 1917 it was authorized to grant 4-year degrees to women pursuing teaching degrees. It is now Georgia College recognized as one of the best undergraduate teaching programs in the US South. The remaining pages are filled with memories of friends and family. Some include interesting trips from nearby locations such as Lake Junaluska North Carolina and "Mt. City" Mountain City GA. A photo of 8 young men wear "Landa Park" tanks. One photo of a man playing saxophone with caption "Alabamy Bound." Many of the remaining photos are of young children. Includes images of women's dormitories schoolmates and details extracurricular programs such as social dances and boating excursion. Most photos from Washington state. 7 x 10 1/2 in. Original black cloth boards. 23 pages filled with 85 black and white photos of various sizes ranging from 2.5 x 1.5 in. to 5.5 x 3.5 in. Three are loose photos. Inscribed on inside front cover: "From Papa Merrie Christmas 1921."<br/><br/>A major facet of this young woman's life was her education as she includes more photos and captions that reference this than anything else. The album owner shows great pride in her dormitory room in which she is shown reading in a chair with a Harvard pennant prominently affixed tot he wall behind her. "Taken in my room "77" 1922". Another image shows the view from window in this room: "Lookout Mt" taken from my window '77'". This time was so important for her that she even takes care to remember the room numbers of her roommates and other fellow students such as: "My old roommate of 1919 Room 44" and "Miss Fiddler Roommate "Room 28" Summer School 1920". She even notes that one former classmate who "roomed in "27" 1921-22 was "A Good Kid". Also includes one photo of four students in a Home Economics high school class.<br/><br/>Album also includes images of her friends and family and recent memories from World War I including one handsome 5 1/2 x 3 1/2 photo of two soldiers in WWI-era uniforms kneeling with their firearms. A smaller photo of a man in military uniform dated 1919 includes this caption: "In days of old 'do you remember the telephone office' and those letters Ha! Ha." The album's owner certainly had a sense of humor and often includes nicknames inside jokes and playful asides. "I looked like this the Summer of 1920. But those times are over." Next to a photo of people out boating she writes: "Out on the lake.Washington" and "Some bunch of "chickens". And in a series of photos in which she models fancy clothes she writes: "Do you think I look natural" She also includes humorous outtakes of her friends such as "W.L. asleep after the dance Ha! Ha!" and notes family members work machinery very helpful technology at the time "Malcolm's little old machine". Very good condition. unknown books

The antique album cover has gilt and and brown designs with a beautiful dark-haired woman's cameo in the center. Album size is aprox 11 x 9.5 in. This album contains 25 cabinet-sized 5 x 7" photos of male and female students and 18 smaller photographs approximately 3 x 5". Some photographs have handwritten pencil annotation with student's name and graduation year on photo verso. "W.H. Ballard Class '01 M.A." Primarily individual bust-length portraits though there are 3 group photos. An early photographic record of one of the first education movement opened to female students geared toward scientific courses. Monson Academy was founded in 1804 and is one the oldest co-educational boarding schools in the United Sates. It was the first prep academy in the US to enroll Chinese students in 1847. Yung Wing who later also became first Chinese graduate of an American university Yale University - 1854. Monson in the 1870's became a sciences school that prepared students for MIT. Today in the The school is known today as Wilbraham & Monsson; in 1971 it merged with Wilbraham Academy founded as Wesleyan Academy Some light wear and light foxing to pages but both the photos and the album are in very good condition. unknown books
16640Women Education Photo album of girls primary school 1931-1938. 8 3/4 x 12 in. Original blue cloth board covers. 58 Gelatin silver print black and white photos of various sizes from 2.5 x 3.5 in. to 5.5 x 4 in. Follows a class of girl students over the course of 7 years.<br/><br/>Album kept by schoolteacher of the students at All Saints Girls' School in London. Inscription on inside front cover: "From 1931- Recording many happy hours with All Saints . Candidates Central Islington." Begins with "The Original Class" and identifying class leaders including one small child identified as "Baby". In 1935 identified as the "Jubilee Year" celebrating 25 years of King George V students had photos taken in Kensington Garden while performing a "Jockey Dance" and national dances for England Ireland Scotland and Wales. Children are dressed up in the garden as a "gypsy" jockey and "butterflies and elves." There are also pictures of girls in short dresses posing as part of the Skipping Team. In other images students wear plaid skirts ties and hats while performing a "Scotch Dance"; they also wore special costumes for different dances such as the "Mountain March" the "Shoe maker" and "Cochin-China". Includes note on what the girls were wearing for each yearly photo: "Blue and white check dresses with white collars & cuffs" and 1937 Coronation Year King George VI / Red white & blue dresses". Includes many images of outdoor recreation such as hiking and boating perhaps on Lake Mendota campus life and agricultural scenes. Most photos lack captions but some locations are labeled such as outings to the Flambeau River Park Falls WI; Ellsworth WI; and the Boise River. Images of Bascom Hill and North Hall on the historic University of Wisconsin campus. One real photograph postcard shows women students seated outside and is captioned "'The Sun Bath' Co-eds at UW". Some photographs show the inside of male dormitories on campus decorated with pennants for Wisconsin and Rose Polytechnic Institute Terre Haute IN. Includes several photos of manual and agricultural labor such as baling hay. <br/><br/>Founded when Wisconsin achieved statehood in 1848 University of Wisconsin-Madison was the first public university established in Wisconsin and remains the oldest and largest public university in the state. At the time this album was compiled research teaching and service at the UW was influenced by a tradition known as "the Wisconsin Idea" which holds that the boundaries of the university should be the boundaries of the state and that the research conducted at UW-Madison should be applied to solve problems and improve health quality of life the environment and agriculture for all citizens of the state. This Progressive-era policy applied the expertise of the state's university to social legislation that benefited all the state's citizens; it led to classic programs such as regulation of utilities workers' compensation tax reform and university extension services; sometimes expressed in the maxim that "the boundaries of the university are the boundaries of the state". 17162Girls Education Japan Photograph album from a girl student in Japan c. 1926. Filled with 78 original silver gelatin print photographs of classmates school activities and social outings. Original cloth and red boards. 10 x 7.5 in. "Photo Album" printed on front cover. Pasted label on the final page with some information on the original owner dated 1926. Photographs of various small sizes from 1.75 x 2.5 inches to 3 x 5". Many images are school portraits of teenage girls in their matching uniforms posing either individually in pairs or small groups. Occasional photographs of teenage boys as well including one with the sitter dressed in a samurai outfit. Photos of a field day with outdoor footraces marches and performances. A few later photographs of older young women in civilian clothes posing by a river and strolling in a park together. These may be images of some of the younger students years later as adults. Most of the images show figures in Western styles clothes although 2 photographs show women dressed up in kimonos. Images lack captions but there is an autograph on one photograph. Some soiling to cover and 8 sheets of album are detached from spine. Unique images are in very good condition. unknown books

Includes 12 postcards of locations in Washington state and British Columbia Canada. 40 pages. Album is completely full with photos on every page.<br/><br/>Notably includes a photo of a young woman graduate in cap and gown who holds a pennant that reads "Haddon H.S. 1911". In another photo a women holds a pennant that includes "1918". Other images in the album include women playing tennis and riding bicycles. Girls wear uniforms and march across a field in formation or perform calisthenics; other photos show the same schoolgirls camping in nature amongst tents and forest scenery. There are also images of younger children at school and at play wearing dress up clothes or preparing for a stage production; they wear colonial-era costumes and one is even dressed in a Japanese kimono. Some photos depict community life such as local parades in which dozens of American flags are proudly waved; and even images of shipbuilders at work. Few photos have handwritten captions but those that do show personality of the owner with remarks such as: "cutie" and "happy". Includes 12 postcards of the University of Washington Seattle campus and of attractions around Victoria British Columbia. Most are captioned in white ink. Slight warp to some photographs from being pasted to the pages and occasion residue from fingerprints. Beautiful impressionistic portraits of the life of these hopeful young teachers in Cornwall. In addition to the many vivid photos of the teachers going for outings and picnicks "Help yourself to the cream" and lively portraits "the long and short of it" under a photograph of a tall young woman smiling ruefully there are photographs of the ancient city of Cornwall which carry a beautiful spectral quality. <br/><br/>In the 1920s teaching was one of the only pursuits available to women who wanted economic enfranchisement outside of waged domestic service. However there were many restrictions placed on female teachers; The women we see smiling in these photos although choosing liberation in one sense also faced much personal sacrifice. These women had to live morally exemplary lives by the rigorous contemporary standards since they were entrusted to raise the youth. Additionally until 1944 in the UK no married women were allowed to work as teachers. If a woman teacher married she had to resign from her job; if she was already married she was sacked. Some women found a way around the marriage bars by marrying in secret and then living apart from their husband or by having a very long engagement. Most female teachers however remained single in a time when marriage and motherhood signified adult female identity. The tensions between two identities-- that of the professional teacher and that of the feminine woman-- coupled with the influence of the suffrage movement and systematic unfair treatment in the teacher's unions led to teachers becoming some of the most ardent feminists of the movement. unknown books

Consist of 23 original Gelatin silver print black and white photos. 3 x 4 ¼ inches. c. 1940s-1950. Images show students at work in blood banks in labs studying and relaxing between classes. Includes photos of school buildings such a the Medical School entrance in addition to several instructors. Some include handwritten captions giving a little more information such as a picture of the "Class of 1950" with 8 women and 1 man identified: "Bev Helen Belle Monkey Noni Ann Betty Joann Bill". Other captions include names of doctors instructors fellow students and the type of work being done in images such as "Bev - vaccine" and "Beth Bueliner - Blood Bank". Other photos identify the subject as the Media Lab Chemistry Lab working with EKG and studying Hematology blood. Students outside of medical school entrance. Photos of a quick break grabbing a coffee and snack of animal crackers.<br/><br/>Although women had participated in the informal practice of medicine for hundreds of years there were relatively few women studying medicine in the United States at this time. By 1900 only about a dozen medical schools had opened to coeducation and female graduates often found themselves unable to access training hospitals and professional associations. The trailblazing young women in these photos whom we see performing experiments and examining patients bucked the trend of their generation to become doctors. Early images of women in medicine are very rare and a fine addition to a collection. Very good condition. unknown books

From unknown European country. 4 girls in matching uniforms stand around a table engage in experiments and write observations in their notebooks. 1 uniformed young man stands nearby while an older student or teacher supervises. This dates from the 1920s after WWI had ended but a period in which militarization in Europe was considered of upmost national importance. The early 20th century was also a period of great development for women's education as more schools and programs opened to girls. 17017Women Education Photo Album Elmira NY Female College Class of 1862 album. 42 original photographs each aprox 1.5 x 1.25 in. Nearly all photos are identified with handwritten captions. 114 pages 53 pages overall have been used for photos writing or both. All entries dated 1861-1862. Light brown leather boards. 8 x 5.25 in. Titled on cover with gilt design of an autograph book and a quill pen surrounded by ivy "Autographs." The book is full of signatures and small oval portraits of the girls who were the 1862 class of Elmira College. Along with signatures of her classmates the owner of this book has some signatures from people of the town of Elmira New York Augustus W. Cowles President of the collegeand other other instructors. One page has been illustrated with the outline of a pile of letters into which girls have written their names addresses and messages. It would be several decades more before Academic yearbooks as we know them now with photographs and names of individual students and graduates became common. At this time the typical "Annual" was a small catalog that acted as a memento of students attending and also as advertising with general business catalog information concerning the school inside. School photos of any kind were highly uncommon. This student's personally made yearbook containing photographs and names of a large portion of her classmates as well as teacher's and college president is an extremely unique women's educational history item. Leather on spine is mostly absent or pulling away though internal hinges are sound. Good to very good condition.<br/><br/>The New York-area college is the oldest still in existence which granted degrees to women equivalent of those given to man. Elmira College was first conceived on in 1851 with the intention of creating a college that would grant degrees to women equal to those of men. The first students arrived in October 1855 though the rooms had not yet been completely furnished and the furnace was not yet working. Also not all of the students were ready for college-level work. In September 1855 Rev. Augustus W. Cowles visited the campus and the following year was offered the position of president. Vassar's first president modeled the acceptance requirements and curriculum of his school upon those of Elmira. The members of the first graduating class received diplomas in 1859 only 2 years before this album was created. The college faced a difficult beginning. The student body was minuscule; in 1884 only three students were in the graduating class. Two reasons for this situation were the national tumult caused by the Civil War and the opening of other colleges that admitted women. Dr. Cowles believed that a problem was the perception that Elmira was only on the level of a boarding school. He stressed hiring better professors to secure larger graduating classes. . unknown books
