Fine Turkish Original wrappers. Cr. 8vo. (20 x 14 cm). In Turkish. 108, [2] p., bibliography and index. First Edition of this rare first study on Mexico peasantry in Turkish literature written by early Republican Turkish peasantry ideologist and early pioneer of the Republican illumination. Nusret Kemal, who works on the peasantry ideology of many countries in Europe, America, and the Far East, sees Mexico differently from other examples in this context. Although there is a disconnection between the city and the countryside, having a school in each village was also noted as a reason to reduce concerns about the future in this book. According to him, because the school is described not only as a place where education is given but also as an important place where culture is continued, cultural heritage is shared and the consciousness of the nation is kept alive. In addition, schools, which serve as a bridge for the revolutionary movements to reach the people, have been interpreted as the most important pillar of state-people integration. This text, in the early period of the Republic of Turkey, has been an important reference in the context of the establishment of the Village Institutes of Turkey. Kemal says in the preface "When speaking of Mexico, one point in particular that deserves attention is that the gap between the modern city and the backward village is too deep to be bridged in one year, or even a generation. The visible realm of efforts to unite old Mexico and new Mexico is the village schools and local education; it is again these schools that pioneers new nationalism in Mexico.". First Edition. Extremely rare. Only two copies in Paris and Istanbul in OCLC: 32655350, 949393158.
Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) In contemporary cloth bdg. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In Ottoman script. 43, 59 p. Divan literature is described as "a certain tradition literature with its rules and boundaries" in the most general form. These rules and boundaries have enabled the formation of common expressions in religion and in Sufi intellection in particular and in poetry by the influence of Persian literature, and they have made it traditional in time. In this context, in classical Turkish poetry, whose male poets are predominant in quality and quantity, patriarchal rhetoric presents an outlook that its frame has been established by common tropes, metaphors, poetic themes and in short by similar imaginations and ideas. The divans of Lady Mihri (died after 1512), Lady Leyla (died in 1848) and Lady Seref (1809-1861) have different aesthetic understandings in that context. Laylâ Hanim was one of the few Turkish women poets who made a collection of her poems. Lived in Istanbul and died in 1848. Her family was close to the Ottoman Sultanate and Leylâ Hanim, witnessed the reign of Mahmud II (1808-1839) and Abdülmecid I (1839-1861). She is the daughter of Moralizâde Hâmid Efendi. Her mother Hadîce Hanim is the sister of Keçecizâde Izzet Molla, a notable bureucrat and poet of the times. She has three brothers, Atâullah Mehmed Efendi, Nurullah Mehmed Efendi and Hâlid Efendi, who died at a young age. She had financial problems after her father's death and she expressed those in her poems. Some of her poems in the divan mention that her father and brother Hâlid Efendi have lived in Bursa for a while. She is educated by Keçecizâde Izzet Molla, she is quick-witted. She experienced a short marriage, which lasted about a week; after the divorce she devoted herself to poetry. Her grave is in Galata Mevlevîhanesi. Following books include information of her life, characteristics and poetry: Fatin Tezkiresi (363), Ahmet Rif'at's Lugat-i Târîhiyye ve Cogrâfiyye (154), Tuhfe-i Nâ'ilî (895), Sicill-i Osmânî (93), Bursali Mehmet Tahir's Osmanli Müellifleri (406), Haci Begzâde Ahmet Muhtar's Sâir Hanimlarimiz (51-2), Mehmed Zihnî Efendi's Mesâhir'ün-Nisâ (195), and Semseddin Sâmî's Kâmusü'l-A'lâm (4060). These resources indicate that Leylâ Hanim is from a noble family and the links of the family to the high cadres of Ottoman bureaucracy and their intellectual property have left traces in her poetry. AH 1299 = AD 1882. Fourth Edition. (Source: All poetry). OCLC 163633996.; Özege 4177 / 2. First Bulaq Edition. Litho. Rare.

New English Paperback. Pbo. Roy. 8vo. (23 x 16 cm). In English. 593 p. "During the 38 years of its existence Bosphorus University has perpetuated the cultural traditions it inherited from Robert College, and it is generally considered to be one of the top undergraduate institutions in the world, with outstanding graduate programs in most fields other than medicine and law. Though it is a Turkish state university, the language of instruction in almost all courses is English; the majority of its faculty have doctorates from American universities and most of its outstanding students go on to do graduate studies at universities in the U. S. Our students come from every province of Turkey and from more than sixty other countries, for Bosphorus University is a cultural beacon that shines across national boundaries and internal political divisions, distinguished by the diversity of its student body and faculty and its tolerance of ethnic, religious, and cultural differences. And so my book will examine the ways in which Robert College and Bosphorus and Bosphorus University have been a bridge of culture between what orientalists have called East and West.

About The Book : Since the publication of the older edition so much additional knowledge has been acquired in most branches of classical study that it has been found necessary, not merely to alter, but practically to rewrite many of the articles : this applies particularly to the articles on Mythology, and to many of those on Topography. Several new plans and maps have been inserted to illustrate the articles on those places which are most important in Greek and Roman literature. Among these are the map of the Troad and that of Syracuse, which is based upon one in Freeman's Sicily. For the alterations in the map of Athens, and for the description of the city, much help has been derived from Miss Harrison's Mythology and Monuments of Athens, horn Dr. Lolling' s treatise, and from Professor Gardner's New Chapters in Greek History, from which book also the plans of Tiryns, Eleusis, and Olympia, with much valuable information, have been taken. About The Author : Sir William Smith (1813 – 1893) was an English lexicographer. He became known for his advances in the teaching of Greek and Latin in schools. Smith next turned his attention to lexicography. His first attempt was A Dictionary of Greek and Roman Antiquities, which appeared in 1842, the greater part being written by him. Then followed the Dictionary of Greek and Roman Biography and Mythology in 1849. A parallel Dictionary of Greek and Roman Geography appeared in 1857, with some leading scholars of the day associated with the task. In 1867, Smith became editor of the Quarterly Review, a post he held until his death. G.E.Marindin (1841-1939) Formerly fellow of king’s college, Cambridge. Edited works: Letters Descriptive of Journeys in Europe and Asia Minor in the Years 1794-1796.
