The portraits have no background painting. 8 images mounted with dark turquoise border silk some with cracks; 3 images are mounted on card at a later date. All images loose in papered boards which open Western style and are disbound and very rubbed. Most images are in lovely and larger than most. Besides some small cracks they are in very good condition. 4to 11 1/2 x 8 unknown

The Primary School committee was much agitated by the Secretary of the Board of Education Horace Mann's Seventh Annual Report which complained that there was no real system of education in Boston specifically that the teachers in the higher grades were forced to teacher the basic elements that should have been covered earlier: "The elements must be taught somewhere. If neglected in the primary schools they must be taught in the grammar schools. And thus the order of things is reversed and disarrangement introduced into the whole school system. The teacher who is employed and paid for instructing in the higher branches is compelled to devote time and attention to the studies appropriately belonging to schools of a lower grade. This is found to be the case to too great an extent in the schools of our city. We do not say this to the disparagement of the primary school teachers or from the belief that there is a want of fidelity on their part. We believe it to be in part at least owing to the system of teaching or rather want of system in the primary schools." The Primary School committee attempted to rebut his criticism point by point. A photograph of the wedding party of the American missionary and author William Jackson Callahan and Martha Taylor Callahan taken at the Kwassui Girls’ School later Kwassui Women’s University in Nagasaki. At the time Taylor was representing the Women’s Board of the Methodist Episcopal Church and serving perhaps as principal of the school which had been started in 1879. Callahan began his work as a teacher in Japan shortly after graduating from Emory in 1890. The two would spend over forty-five years in Japan as missionaries. Ikuta unknown

Inscribed: "Josiah Quincy Jr. Esq. with the respects of the author." Name of Charles F. Adams written on the title page in a non-authorial hand possibly Quincy's. Quincy a member of the Whig Party was the second of three Josiah Quincys to serve as Mayor of Boston; Charles Francis Adams Sr. the son of John Quincy Adams was a lawyer and a Whig and then later a member of the Free Soil Party and finally a Republican who studied law with Daniel Webster served in the House of Representatives but resigned to become Lincoln's Ambassador to Great Britain from 1861 to 1868 where he along with his son Henry Adams who acted as his secretary was instrumental in maintaining British neutrality and preventing British diplomatic recognition of the Confederacy during the American Civil War. Letter written by Sarah Porter founder of Miss Porter's School for Girls to a friend and possibly former student regretfully declining an invitation to her wedding. Miss Porter studied privately with Yale Professors. and her brother Noah later became President of Yale. She was an opponent of women's suffrage. <br /> She notes in this letter that affairs at the school will keep her far too busy to make the journey. Sarah Porter 1813-1900 founded her school in Farmington in 1843 setting it up as an institution at which girls could receive a well-rounded academic education. She writes in part:<br /> <br /> "My dear Mary I thank you heartily that you have desired me as one of your wedding guests and I should be very happy in being with you at this so happy moment of your life. I could not easily under any circumstances easily leave school for so long a time as a journey to Newton would require - but now Mr. Brandt's wretched health renders him unable to teach and his classes fall daily into my care so that my place is daily here. Your own and your brother's wedding at once will not only doubly crown the day but give promise to multiplied successive anniversaries. unknown

A rare account of the will of the wealthy tobacco merchant James Gillespie of Spylaw 1726-1797 who left a substantial bequest some £2700 to establish a school for poor boys and a further amount for a hospital for the elderly. The hospital later became workshops for the blind and was demolished in the 1970s but the school remains in operation though having moved premises several times as one of Edinburgh’s highest-ranking state high schools with alumni including Muriel Spark Ronnie Corbett and Alastair Sim. A photographic yearbook from the Albany Law School class of 1860 assembled by student Horatio Colony 1835-1917.<br /> Opened in 1851 Albany Law School is the oldest independent law school in the United States. Many of its students in the 1850s and '60s became prominent lawyers and judges.<br /> As is the custom with the professionally produced college photograph yearbooks produced by George Kendall Warren starting in the late 1850s each photograph is inscribed beneath by the sitter with his name and hometown. The album opens with professors Ira Harris Amasa Parker Amos Dean Nathaniel Harris and Levi Chamberlain. Some notable students include Alexander P. Ketchum who became a Colonel and Chief Appraiser of the Port of New York; Clayton H. Delano 1836-1920 who served eight terms as the Town of Ticonderoga's Supervisor and was elected twice to the New York State Assembly; and William S. Opdyke general counsel of the Delaware and Hudson Company. <br /> Horatio Colony 1835-1917 whose picture appears last and is unfortunately obscured by damage assembled this album. The photograph of Levi Chamberlain is inscribed to "Horatio friend and pupil." He was admitted to the bar in New Hampshire and New York in 1860; in 1869 he along with his brother George took over the management of the family business the Faulkner and Colony Woolen Mill. He held several other civic and local government positions before his death in an automobile accident in 1917. His son Horatio Jr. 1900-1977 a poet and novelist established the Colony family home as a museum upon his death.<br /> <br /> With: Autograph album containing autographs of acquaintances and some notable figures including Amos Bronson Alcott "A. Bronson Alcott" and Octavius Frothingham "O.B. Frothingham". In near matching black morocco autograph album stamped in blind and gilt extremities rubbed. With later inscription of C.W.
