193100MV73Battle Creek Michigan 1931. Autographed cover by Paul A. Siple 1908-1968 American Antarctic explorer and geographer who took part in six Antarctic expeditions including the two Byrd expeditions of 1928-1930 and 1933-1935 having first gone representing the Boy Scouts of America as an Eagle Scout. Siple was also a Sea Scout. His first and third books covered these adventures. Siple and Charles F. Passel developed the wind-chill factor. From 1963-66 he served as the first U.S. Scientific Attache to Australia and New Zealand. Antarctic features Siple Coast and Siple Island were named in his honor. On embossed War Office letterhead. ‘Scouting for Boys’ did not begin its serialized publication until January 1908 but Baden-Powell’s entry in the Oxford DNB states that it was Haldane as Secretary for War who ‘persuaded him that character training should be at the centre of any scheme of boy instruction’ following a ‘major inspection’ of the Boys’ Brigade by him as Vice-President at Glasgow in April 1904. 1p 4to. In fair condition lightly aged with slight creasing and a short closed tear to one edge. Reads: ‘Dictated. / 23rd. May 1906. / Dear General Baden-Powell / Thank you for your letter. I have seen Sir Edwad Ward about your scheme and he is to have a meeting with you. / Believe me / Yours sincerely / cyclostyled signature R. B. Haldane’. 1927499779Marcus J. Younger 1927. Softcover. Good. First edition. Small quarto. 24pp. Stapled pictorial wrappers that includes a photograph of the author. Good only copy which while sound is rubbed slightly soiled and with creased throughout. An autobiography by Marcus J. "Scout" Younger later known as Bison-Bill presenting a detailed accounts of his transgressions and encounters with the law which begins in part: "Born in the land of the outlaws. on the 8th day of April 1874. on the great Mathies Ranch twenty-one miles southwest of San Antonio Texas. My father was foreman of the ranch and although my good mother named me Marcus J. as a tribute to the good physician. I was dubbed 'scout' by the first gang of cattle wranglers I ever got tied up with. ." He goes on to describe his exploits including the various gangs he was part of as well as noting his father was with of outlaw group the Younger Boys of Missouri his cousins were members of the Dalton Gang and the James Gang were friends of the family. This title is not recorded in Six-Guns and Saddle Leather but another title by Younger can be found Adams 2471. Rare. OCLC locates one copy at University of Tulsa. [Marcus J. Younger unknown
