Autograph Letter Signed by Hodgson on December 31 1863. 14-page letter on from the seminary days of author Emily Hodgson profiled by close friends and suffragists Frances Willard and Mary Livermore in A Woman of the Century 1893. 8 x 5 inches. 14 pages of lined white stationary. At this time Hodgson was a student at the prestigious Ipswich Female Seminary an early school for girl students where she wrote in lively prose about the New Year's party she prepares to surprise her classmates and hints at her early literary ambitions. About living in a dormitory and celebrating New Year's Eve with other students: "Such a gay time as the six damsels that board in this house are having tonight! As we are all ''young ladies" Mrs. Cowles has given us permission to sit up till quarter past twelve. I was commissioned to provide refreshments arrange the table etc. and really I feel quite proud. None of the girls except my assistant have as yet seen it and I know they do not expect to see quite such a grand affair grand for Boarding school . " New Years Eve don't come but once a year" I hear one of the girls exclaiming. I know they are coming to see why I am so long- Sure enough- and now they are gone." <br/><br/>About her early writing attempts: "I have had a letter come from an old teacher of mine. And I know you won't think me vain if I send it to you for as you fly so hard to have me do well and are the means of my enjoying myself so much and giving what enjoyment I am able to others around me I know it will please you to see that I sometimes succeed . she like Mrs. B is not ordinary woman . she is a very finely educated lady. and I feel pleased that she should like my feeble endeavors. The lady Miss Briggs who writes the note enclosed has been composition teacher here for a long time. You would hardly judge from this not which is far from a good letter from her that was very easy and elegant with her pen. She has written three or four prize essays and won the prizes."<br/><br/>Ipswich Female Seminary was founded in Massachusetts in 1828 and the school's focus was on preparing girls for careers as teachers and missionaries. It offered a "rigorous curriculum" including study of English arithmetic geography chemistry human physiology history the natural sciences religion vocal music and calisthenics and placed an emphasis on "standards of personal conduct and discipline." As part of their preparation students practiced teaching with guidance from school instructors. Mild toning and a few light stains. All sheets except 1 have minor tape repairs at folds. "John Greenleaf Whittier was born in Haverhill Mass.the house still stands in which Whittier was reared.Whittier was taken with illness while visiting at the home of his friend.he had a slight paralytic stroke which produced a difficulty in taking food o medicine and it was plain that he could not be removed to Annesbury where he had always hoped to die. He was conscious to the last and was grateful to everyone. He had little acute pain. He lay all night in peace and died in the morning."Charles Dickens: "The boy Charles was not strong but nevertheless before he was ten years old he was obliged to earn his own living. He was placed in a blacking warehouse an old ramshackle house near the Thames. The scenes in which he was brought up were the most degrading ones possible.During this time he spent much of his time in the reading room of the British Museum.In 1842 he made his first trip to America. Many look towards their futures as wives: "May your life be bright and sunny and your hubby fat and funny." "Come and see me hubby April 28 1935". Several sign off with colorful nicknames such as Zoot Midge and Bud. 18 photos of classmates. People are identified by given names although one is simply labeled "pals" though not the context. Many photos appear to be outside of a large school building and two images show "our bus" including the driver and all 28 students who rode it. Two show young ladies labeled "me" Elthel & Maria standing in slacks. Two others shows the subjects in costumes "Lyle & Sally" are dressed in vintage costumes and "Paul Smith" appears to wear a dress and pearl necklace on the following page. 15 additional signatures from classmates p. 120.<br/><br/>22 signatures from teachers and 3 photos. The rivers are not deep; the pure clear water scarcely reaches the chest. When the Indians want to make an enjoyable excursion with their wives and children they go to these islands. They either swim across the river for they are excellent swimmers or they wade across carrying the little children. In fact the mothers can manage three children at once the smallest on a shoulder clutching its hand and the other two under her arms. With the free hand the women carry a basket full of fruit or other food for the occasion. For fear of meeting enemies the men carry bows and arrows. In order not to wet them they attach the quiver to their hair and hold the bows stretched and ready with and arrow prepared instantly to defend themselves as can be seen in our engraving. "These Journals are intended to contain a record of the daily course of instruction and occupation through which Students pass whilst at the Institution. It is expected that particular attention should be paid to the plainness and legibility of the writing; to the grammar spelling and punctuation; and also to the general arrangement and neatness of execution." All entries dated to 1857. Weekly written class schedules included throughout notebook listing coursework in Reading Scripture Language Numbers Writing Natural History Domestic Economy Dictation and Geography. Student includes notes and short essays on topics including animal and plant life. "Lesson on the Whale: The most remarkable peculiarities of the whale tail are as follows - though they inhabit water and never leave it they are not fish but mammals breathing air by lungs and therefore coming to the surface to breath." "This book will be found to be a convenient form in which to keep a record of one's commencement and all the interesting facts connected with it including accounts of the exercises brief sketches of the teachers the classmates newspaper clippings etc. The keeping of such a record will afford a great deal of entertainment not only at the time when it is all fresh in the mind but in future years when it will serve to recall many pleasant memories which otherwise would be forgotten." Memory albums were quite popular in America at this time especially among young women at female academies who would fill out books to remember time spent together.<br/><br/>Records Antoinette Butler's social life and academic record including her studies in French German Latin Physics Chemistry Geometry History and Literature. Includes a short handwritten history of the school Brooklyn Heights Seminary. "Miss Brigham who was associated with him was a wonderful woman in every way. Every girl who was under her influence feels the uplifting force to this day and has imparted one small part of it to her children. After Miss Brigham's death in a railroad accident a Memorial hall was erected to her memory in connection with the Young Women's Christian Association.The curriculum which includes Kindergarten and one year of college work embraces almost every department of education." A note from her grandfather pasted in congratulating her on her graduation: "My darling granddaughter Antoinette - On this happy occasion that marks one of the transitional specks of your life I gladly transfer to your keeping one fo the the most precious souvenirs of the sainted grandmother whom you have only known through the loving memories of your own dear father and of the two aunties - one translated to the heavenly life - who with myself have watched with intense interest your development in to a lovely and helpful womanhood. 1709319th c. Women Education Partial handwritten letter regarding the Monroe Female Seminary in Monroe County Michigan. No date c. 1850. John P. Le Roy writes to a friend regarding a potential business dealing with the Seminary. 2 pages 10 x 8 in. Signature page present but opening page absent. Stating in part: "Mr. Boyd of the Monroe Female Seminary said that if you could furnish capital enough he did not know but he would like to take you as a partner in his school but as I supposed from what he intended that he would want a partner with some three thousand dollars at least to invest." Mr. Boyd in reference here is Erasmus Boyd who was President of the Seminary. At this time Seminary or Institutes for women were being created to offer educational opportunities to female students in preparation for them to work as teachers. The seminaries were private institutions without public funding so having enough financial backers was essential for the success of the school. In very good condition. Carter President of the School writes about examinations and fundraising to Rev. H. M. Garfield of New Haven CT. 1 page. 9 3/4 x 7 3/4 inches. Stating in part:Â "I have been more busily engaged than even you can imagine. I took it into my head to get up a semi-annual Examination which draws heavily upon my time and energies and to cap the whole I narrowly escaped the loss of one of my eyes. A piece of red hot burning coal few into it."Â The Albany Female Seminary was a very early addition to the Female Seminary Movement; it was founded in 1828 and three of its seven Principals were women. On personalized stationary for Principal of Washington Female Seminary Miss N. Sherrard. Addressed to "My Dear Sister" and signed "June." With original mailing envelope. 2 pages. 9 x 5.5 inches. She writes on personal matters with her sister and gives an update on the school and teachers: "Bessie Ewing is now well.she is the most popular teacher in Seminary. The girls are all quite well at present & I hope they may keep well all spring." The Washington Female Seminary was a Presbyterian seminary for women operating from 1836 to 1948 in Washington Pennsylvania. During the 19th century it was well-regarded as one of the top institutions for women in the area. It was founded abolitionist Francis Julius LeMoyne and Alexander Reed and its formal charter came in 1839. By 1886 there were over 100 students enrolled; and the curriculum included both a preparatory course which generally gained admission to the finest women's colleges and a regular course with studies in music art and elocution. McMichael Principal of UFS writes to her friend and former classmate Miss Campbell who is looking for a teaching position. 4 pages on folded sheet. 7 x 4.5 in. With original mailing envelope. Stating in part:"I willingly would do anything in my power to assist you but at present know of no situation to which to recommend you early in the fall or rather summer had many applications for teacher but all are supplied now. My own teachers are engaged for the year and if no unforeseen Providence interferes will need to make no changes. Am sorry you are not now comfortably situated.Our school here is very prosperous and pleasant much more so than I had expected or dared to anticipate. Would like very much to have you come and make a a visit can you not Xenia is indeed a very pleasant and cheerful place.My youngest sister is here attending school which makes it very pleasant for me. Very frequently meet old schoolmates and friends which also makes it very pleasant. Shall hope to have a visit from you sometime this winter." This letter was written in 1865 just months after the Civil War ended; by all accounts the experience during the War at the Female Seminary was positive. Records note time spent playing games studying and socializing with the boys at the Male Seminary. Some of the girls enjoyed dancing afternoon teas socializing and local excursions. When news that a Union Army Division would be passing through by train Xenia extended an invitation for the boys in blue to stop in town for a square meal. The whole town cooked a memorable feast for the soldiers-the Seminary girls chipping in with over 44 dozen freshly baked biscuits and other items. In very good condition. On Western Theological Seminary letterhead with fine engraving of the school building on both sheets.  To "Miss Ellsworth and Miss Gore" from L.M. Jones who appears to be a teacher or Director of the Seminary writing to former pupils who are now teachers themselves at an institution in New Hampshire. In part: "I often hear good reports about both of you by Mrs. Chamberlain. School has come to close once more and we are commencing to disperse some leaving for good others for two weeks. Dear Mrs. Chamberlain will have about ten of the unfortunate ones here for X Mas also Dr. Gold and family which will help to make it merry for her. Mr. Davies wishes to be kindly remembered to both of you. I intend spending my X Mas with him and I am sure that we will have a lovely time as we always do when we get together. We were all vaccinated here last week to protect ourselves from the small pox which is raging in the city at the present time. Miss Jarvis wishes to be kindly remembered to you. I presume that you're aware of her undertaking since you left. She is as you know a very brave young lady to undertake such responsibility as she has and I am a little afraid that her health will brake down under the strain. Hoping to be able to write a longer letter next time." This handwritten nursing school notebook includes anatomical drawings and detailed information on "the practice of hygiene important in care of patient.how to prevent infection. amount of food needed by individual patient" based on diagnosis. Original black and red cloth boards. 2-ring binder. 10 x 9 in. Some pages loose or removed from binder. Comes with 2 anatomical studies of a human with numerous labeled body parts such a femoral artery anterior tibial temporal lobe dorsal plexus auxiliary vein etc. Three loose sheets with notes on obstetrics and medicine from Jennie Edmundson Memorial Hospital in Council Bluffs IA. Filled with handwritten entries on numerous medical and scientific topic including: Hygiene Chemistry Air Quality and Water Cleanliness Wounds Dietetics Post-Operative Care Childbirth Muscular Spinal Disease Diseases of Children and Diseases of the Joints among others. Most entries include the name of the Physician leading the course along with the lecture date. In addition to notes there is also 1 quiz on Bacteriology and 1 graded exam. Two handwritten tables: 1 organizes different parts of body including Dorsal cavity ventral cavity thoracic cavity buscal cavity nasal cavity and pelvic cavity; second table organizes different body areas and the body secretions and enzymes active in those areas. <br/><br/>Quiz on Bacteriology: "Bacteria are the smallest living forms of plant life. The three important groups of Bacteria are the cocci bacilli spirilli.Pathogenic is disease producing bacteria.The bacteria that cause pneumonia are the pneumococcus pneunommia-diplococcus and sometime streptococcus.Antitoxins are little anti-bodies in bacteria or in the blood which try to over power the toxins and does overpower them." Definitions for various types of specific wounds and important symptoms: "pain hemorrhage swelling discoloration." Post Operative Care section deals with how to treat ailments such as hemorrhages and other common post-surgery complications. "Post-operative care.Acute dilation of stomach may follow any operation regardless of what kind. Absolute rest while carrying temp. most tubercular patients are nervous." On Childbirth: "Baby drops. Pain all but stops. Baby's head presses down sometimes 2 weeks or a month ahead. It obliterates cervix. About every 15 min. there is a uterus contraction." On skull fractures: "Unconsciousness following a fracture of a skull may not appear for 2 or 3 days after the fracture.Hemorrhage pressure & bone. Pressure may cause paralysis of a foot or leg on opposite side." Disease of the joints: "Any joint inflammation is arthritis.heat applied to these diseases is of great benefit. Massage is beneficial." "Dietetics is science which teaches the correct feeding of any individual in health and disease." "Fundamental Rules. 1. Nurse should known food harmful in certain disease condition. Do not depend on appetite of patient as guide for food." Study guide for Nutrition Health quiz with practice questions: "Uses of mineral salts in body.Name a condition of disease due to lack of mineral salts.Could body subsist on concentrated food alone Tell why." Dietary notes for those afflicted with Anemia Tuberculosis Liver Disturbance and Rheumation. "Diet in Disease of Stomach and Intestines.Diet rules. Food well masticated patient eat slowly. Regular hours for meals. Avoid extreme of hot or cold. Rest after meals if possible. Fluids after meals not with it; avoid constipation." Medicinal properties of different kinds of water including mineral water: "Mineral water should not be used for general use unless ordered by doctor. Strong alkali water irritates digestive tract." Also notes of the effects of coffee and tea: "Coffee-stimulating property-caffeine.effects of coffee. Acts on muscular and nervous system. Relieves fatigue. Mild laxative. Stimulates gastric digestion. Used in excess causes extreme nervousness." This period was a time of great demand for trained medical nurses as World War I was raging in Europe. Between 1917 and 1919 over 22000 professionally-trained female nurses were recruited by the American Red Cross to serve in the U.S. Army. While this notebook comes from a student at the time who does not appear to have served in W.W.I she was surely motivated by the patriotic urge to educate and train herself in case she needed to join the war effort. Original boards. 214 pages. Unpaginated. First 30 pages of notebook were later repurposed to record Deaths and Marriage notices clipped from newspapers for friends and family from 1879-1884. Handwritten label on front cover "Deaths and Marriages". Original owner name written inside front cover "Laura E. Healy Room No. 2 Point Street Grammar School September 6th 1876." Book is filled with handwritten math problems and their solutions. Some of them are challenging practical situations while others are more straightforward. "In an orchard ¾ of the trees are apple trees 1/10 peach trees and the remainder Pear trees which are 20 more than ⅛ of the whole. How many trees in the orchard" "How many rolls of paper 9 yards long and 1 ½ ft wide are required to cover 4 sides of a room 18 ft x 16 ft and 9 ft high. Deducting 8 feet off for windows and doors." "Bought a shawl for $18. How shall I mark it so that I may make a dis. of 10% and yet sell for $18". "Divide 6 ⅓ by 9 ½." "Divide 427 by 833 and the quotient by 7/10." "What is the interest of $567 from Jan. 7 1870 to July 27 1872 at 9%" Includes a loose handwritten note in child's hand addressed to Miss L.H. between her and a friend: "You be the gal which I adore Your beauty none surpasses I guess by gosh I love you more than buckwheat cakes & 'lasses".
