Bound in contemporary publisher's binding title in ink on spine. Minor edge wear minor staining to lower cover. Quires C and E loosening internally very fresh and clean retaining deckle at fore-edge and bottom edge toning to plate marginal paper flaw and rear reinforcement of crease to plate otherwise an excellent copy. Rare first and sole edition of this treatise on the proportional compass written by the Jesuit Giovanni Marchelli. The work was expressly written for the use of Marchelli's mathematics pupils in the Jesuit College of Milan and thus provides interesting evidence for the use of scientific instruments in Jesuit education. The text offers an advanced understanding of Galileo's landmark instrument and coming from a Jesuit it is perhaps notable that Galileo's "invention" of the instrument is so candidly celebrated. The proportional compass or 'sector' in fact combines two separate instruments one for making observations by adding a quadrant to its arms the other to calculate various measures like proportion trigonometry and squares and cube roots. Its several scales permit easy and direct solutions for problems in surveying gunnery and navigation. Conceived as a universal instrument the device was adapted for a variety of pedagogical purposes far more diverse than Galileo's sector ranging from pure geometry to such practical operations as taking measurements for the architectural orders p. 11 converting currency and calculating interest p. 42 performing various 'rule-of-three' operations such as the dissolution of business partnerships p. 53 surveying passim and the construction of Napier tables p. 73. The compass scales are well illustrated and the text includes tables giving the positions of the various markings. The large folding plate provides diagrams "for constructing Galileo's quadrant" that show with great refinement exactly where the markings on the quadrant's arm and tangent are to be engraved. 1868List1022Oberlin 1868. Albumen photographs 2 ½ x 3 ½ inches on larger mounts. Some fading to one of the photographs other image with excellent contrast near fine condition overall. Near Fine. An uncommon early pair of views of the Second Ladies' Boarding House at Oberlin College in the 1860s taken at a time when Oberlin was one of few coeducational colleges having first admitted women in 1837. Oberlin's Second Ladies Hall was built in 1861-1863 and featured Itlianate architecture and a rooftop balcony. The building was opened for student accommodations in 1865. The first floor held an assembly room a reading room a dining room parlors and stewards' quarters. The second and third floors housed 100 women. The reports cover issues such as the ongoing struggles to desegregate schools problems with voter suppression for African-Americans and the ongoing struggles for equality. Comes with 2 original press photos of the Civil Rights Committee with President Eisenhower in 1959 and photo of new members the following year. This collection documents racial inequality in the 50's and 60"s that the government sought to address.<br/><br/>Two reports on the "Civil Rights Hearings before the Congressional Committee on Civil Rights": the 1959 report details proposed bills to strengthen the Civil Rights Act of 1957 and addresses issues such as Poll Taxes and the violent ways that white segregationists intimidated Black students from integrating such as making threats to bomb schools. The 1963 document includes a statement from President Kennedy that recognizes the progress made yet outlines priorities for Civil Rights legislation in the US including: voting rights and integrated education. "Civil rights USA: Public Schools Southern States 1963 North Carolina" details the barriers that President Kennedy spoke about with many examples of de facto segregationist policies in public schools. Many of these issues were addressed in the monumental Civil Rights Act of 1964 yet the "Hearing Before the United States Commission on Civil Rights" from 1966 includes over 600 pages of testimony regarding the ongoing fight for racial equality in the US with maps charts graphs and photographic illustrations throughout to support various testimony. 16390An early turn of the century Wellesley College student"s hand decorated fan with over 150 photographic or printed image pasted on including her Ivy league friends and many other university logos. One side of fan has 66 small black and white cutout photographs that show her college friends and other images during her Wellesley years. The reverse of the fan has another 84 small color print and gild paper logos and badges these 84 small ephemera are mostly from colleges and social clubs in New England and the US Northeast but includes some from across America. Among many others it includes logos from Wellesley College Worcester Polytechnic Institute Stanford University and Cark University. The fan when open measures about 10.5 in x 19 in. Fan is in very good condition with fabric lightly soiled at edges. Scarce item since woman college education was just taking off at the turn of the century. Minor wear on wooden handle and fan. Others show young women reading books and studying outside eating meals together and enjoying campus life. Includes 5 photos of the "Senior Hoop Rolling" tradition on May Day 1912. Photos of friends lovingly labeled with nicknames such as Chub Selina Honey and Marion. Includes photos from many locations around upstate New York including the Hudson Valley and Finger Lakes regions: Frontenac Point Minnewaska Mohonk and Yankee Lake. Also photos from Digby a small town in Nova Scotia Canada. In addition to the images of Wellesley there are photos of several other academic institutions. Images of academic interiors labeled Drawing Room Mr. Wilson's Room Assembly Room Physics Lab Library and Hall at M.H.S. Group photo of a 16 boys wearing "M" shirts and 3 coaches posing with a trophy and banner reading: "OCIAA Relay Race 1912". Building labeled "Harmony Hall" next to a photo of 14 women with the caption "Inmates of H.H. 1913". 2 large group photos with women in white dresses and a banner "ETA Clionian" one labeled 1914. The ETA Clionian Sorority was active on the SUNY New Paltz campus then a state teachers' college. Later photos appear to be from when the album owner transitioned from being a student to working as a teacher. Young groups of children are photographed together with the handwritten captions "Primary" or "Intermediates". Printed green line drawings illustrations and ornaments by Leta Hazzard Schell throughout. 9-1/4" x 6". Inserted material varies in size. <br/><br/>The graduation album of Voris Awilda Matheny documenting her senior year at West Durham High School in Durham North Carolina. Named the "Poetess" in the hand-written list of class officers Voris seems to have been well-liked and active in school life as well as the "star pupil" of at least one teacher who writes admiringly in the Faculty notes that Voris "had the perseverance genius and gift of poetry to write 'Lohengrin' in rhyme." She was also passionately involved in the debate team providing accounts of several debates the associate editor of the student newspaper the Clarion and the Chaplain of the Adelphian Literary Society. Voris later attended Duke University. The album includes printed sections for messages from faculty and classmates the class "yell" and motto photographs invitations programs sporting events "Spreads and Entertainments" "Music and Dramatics" "Fun and Frolics" including a program for the 1923 "West Durham School Minstrel" which featured "Coontown Thirteen Club Song Hits" ethnic dances such as the "Gypsy Tambourine Drill" and "Cotton Picking Dance" and concluded with a finale of "Old Zip Coon" social events etc. The "Class History" "Class Prophecy" and "Class Poem" were written by the students and provide insight into the composition of the class and via the "Class Prophecy" -- written by "Piggie" White in the form of a fictional 1935 newspaper about the students -- the student's notions about the lives ahead of them. Of particular note is a section of the Prophecy entitled "Women Invade Politics" in which Miss Minnie Holt is a lawyer who has never lost a case; Miss Rhoda Kelley is "the first woman president of the U.S." and who "never feels tremors on addressing Congress for she once debated at Chapel Hill"; and Miss Virgie Reese is a famed public speaker who stumped for Miss Kelley and is "rumored.to shortly use these unusual powers of speech to get herself at the head of the Klux-Klan." Pasted-in material includes printed programs student calling cards a leaf of the Clarion envelopes with manuscript letters and invitations folded inside assorted other notes and cards 4 small photographs of individual students botanical material napkins etc. Laid in are a wedding invitation a card containing manuscript debate notes and two letters sent to one Harry G. Rosenbluh from Julius Nelson regarding a "typewriting art" contest and including two sheets of sample designs; it is unclear what relation Mr. Rosenbluh or Mr. Nelson may have to Ms. Matheny if any. An unusually well-rounded graduation book providing insight into the life and plans of students particularly female students in the South during the interwar period. C. R.
