"Ancient" volume with 2 pages of prologue and 1 page of index at the front. Grey patterned cloth portfolio with black lettering over a white label on the front cover. Light blue-grey silk wrappers with light blue string-tied bindings. Red lettering in English and Chinese over a tan silk label on the front covers. This is the "November 1929" printing.<br /> <br /> The work is an exhibition catalog from The National Fine Arts Exhibition held in Shanghai in April of 1929 which was organized by the Ministry of Education of the Republic of China headed at the time by Cai Yuanpei. It is considered the first Chinese fine arts exhibition in modern history. The exhibition was a monumental retrospective with more than 2000 pieces of art from throughout Chinese history starting from the Five Dynasties period the 10th century up through the contemporary period. The event brought together the work of countless Chinese artists photographers and architects and also included the work of six Japanese artists. <br /> <br /> The catalog includes some 400 pieces of the artwork featured in the exhibition divided into a "modern" volume and an "ancient" volume. The artwork is printed in b/w offset photographic reproductions and collotypes. Also included in the "ancient" volume are seven works in color with both Chinese and English language titles on protective tissue guards a few of which are beautifully printed color lithographs. The "modern" volume contains a printed calligraphic prologue written in by Cai Yuanpei. The "ancient" volume includes works from some artists as The Four Wangs Wu and Yun from Qing Dynasty Four Monks of the Early Qing Dynasty Bada Shanren Shitao Hong Ren and Kun Can Lan Ying and Gong Xian. The "modern" volume contains works from Zhang Daqian Qi Baishi Wu Hufan Liu Haisu and Lin Fengmian among many others. Both volumes contains extensive indexes of the artwork. Some sunning along the top and bottom edges of the covers. Interiors with sunning to the edges and a few sporadic minor smudges. Images mostly unaffected. Four very striking Japanese education posters in colour the posters showing either a Japanese male or a female student in their black school uniform demonstrating the correct position for sitting or standing. <br> <br>Two creases 15cm and 6.8cm in length respectively from left margin on the poster of the seated boy two repaired closed tears from lower margin 16cm and 3cm on poster showing the seated girl a small area of insect damage upper corner one poster and some general light wear but overall still very good copies of a scarce set of posters. Text in Japanese. Sheet measures 77.8 x 53.4cm These four posters are designed to hang on the wall in the classrooms to teach students how sit and stand properly. The male student is dressed in Japanese school uniform with black jacket with brass buttons and a pair of shorts with knee-high stockings. The female student is dressed in black jacket with sailor-style collar and a skirt. These uniform styles particularly the sailor-suit style for girls started being in general use in Japanese schools in the 1930s suggesting that the posters date from this decade. Correct posture was considered a crucial element in school physical education as it was considered important both for physical health and for conveying proper respect to teachers and others. 1988217269Shanghai.: 上海教育出版社. Shanghai Education Publishing House. 1988. Complete set of 18 coloured posters to accompany Volume 7 of the Chinese language course textbook for Year 6 students. Mostly 52.5 x 76.5cm some 38 x 52.5cm. All stamped with the name of a school "Jiading Town Second Central Primary School Materials Room" on reverse. Occasional foxing to reverse pin-tack holes and slight staining to some edges. Upper corners of Number 17 is chipped with some loss and previous cello-tape repairs. Colours in images of all posters are clear and bright and overall in good condition. Brief captions in simplified Chinese characters. The set of posters includes a wide variety of images from Lenin with soldiers to illustrations of animals and from illustrations of stories from the past to one of a modern high rise building. Of particular interest is picture 18 with a three-generation one-child family happily taking delivery of a new fridge in a high rise apartment with children's toys fresh flowers and a large TV all part of the scene.
