" Omar was an Oriental and it is sadly difficult for a Westerner to interpret what an Oriental says. His words may have a specious sound familiar to the ear but may hide a meaning which he would not care for the uninitiated to understand. . It is plain therefore that one is at liberty to choose between the literal and the allegorical reading of 'Umar's graceful and often epigrammatic lines. Frederick Baron Corvo shows that he is a masterly translator. He often penetrates through the decorative filigree of the French style to something approaching 'Umar's own marvellous concentration condensation." - Introduction. J. B. Nicolas considered himself "Soufique". This edition was printed in Boston and was issued one day before the British edition. John Lane The Bodley Head hardcover
