The ancient Athenians were "quarrelsome as friends, treacherous as neighbors, brutal as masters, faithless as servants, shallow as lovers--all of which was in part redeemed by their intelligence and creativity." Thus writes Philip Slater in this classic work on narcissism and family relationships in fifth-century Athenian society. Exploring a rich corpus of Greek mythology and drama, he argues that the personalities and social behavior of the gods were neurotic, and that their neurotic conditions must have mirrored the family life of the people who perpetuated their myths. The author traces the issue of narcissism to mother-son relationships, focusing primarily on the literary representation of Hera and the male gods and showing how it related to devalued women raising boys in an ambitious society dominated by men. "The role of homosexuality in society, fatherless families, working mothers, women's status, and violence, male pride, and male bonding--all these find their place in Slater's analysis, so honestly and carefully addressed that we see our own societal dilemmas reflected in archaic mythic narratives all the more clearly." 513p. bibliography. index. Some scuffing to textblock and front wrap. Tiny crease to lower corner of wraps. Else minor shelfwear. ; Xv, 283pp. Father-son conflict was for the Athenians a topic of widespread interest that touched the core of both family and political life, particularly during times of social upheaval. In this vivid account of the intermingling of politics and the private sphere in classical Athens, Barry Strauss explores the tensions experienced by a society that cherished both youthful independence and paternal authority. He examines father-son relations within the Athenian family and the way these relations were represented in a wide variety of political and literary texts. His inquiry reveals that representations of patricide, father beating, and son murdering did not necessarily coincide with actual instances but rather served as metaphors for intergenerational tensions fueled by democracy, the sophists, and the Peloponnesian War. ; 283 pages

"On a rainy morning in early 2003, Nia Vardalos found out that she had been nominated for an Oscar for writing the sceenplay for My Big, Fat Greek Wedding . But her mind was not on champagne and celebratory cheer. Instead, she was alone, en route to a fertility clinic, trying yet again for another chance at motherhood. In her attempts to make a baby, Vardalos tried everything from drinking daily jugs of green-mud-tea to voodoo-doll-like acupuncture, to working with two surrogates. All the while she was trying to advance her film career, writing films while dodging questions from family, friends, and Hollywood reporters who continually asked Where s the baby? She decided to try adoption and discovered Foster Family Agencies, meeting social workers and eventually getting paired up with a three year old girl with blonde streaks in her hair who she knew, instantly, was her daughter. With her signature wit and candor, in Instant Mom Vardalos opens up about what came next - the heartaches and smiles, tears and laughter that all make up what it means to be a parent. Filled with stories about Vardalos life in the Hollywood scene - she counts Tom Hanks, Rita Wilson and Sean Hayes as friends - and her unique take on the tough but often hilarious moments that make up motherhood, Instant Mom is about how stubborn optimism can work in one's favor, and how it was this very optimism that brought Nia to her daughter against all of the odds.
