At the age of 85, the author decided to offer this extraordinarily candid portrait of the most famous soprano of the century. He dictated these reminiscences shortly before his death, drawing upon unpublished autobiographical notes left by his wife, his own diaries, and dozens of intimate letters written to him by her when she was away on tour and published here for the first time.
