The state of women's education in Oxford at the height of the suffragette agitation An important set of reports published by the pioneering Association for Promoting the Higher Education of Women AEW containing a mass of information relating to the state of women's education in Oxford at the height of the suffragette agitation. The earliest report dates from 1894-95 and the latest from 1918-19 each running from October of one year to the same month of the next. The sequence is incomplete with two issues missing 1900-01 and 1910-11. The reports are scarce in any sequence. WorldCat and Library Hub record runs at the London School of Economics and the British Library. The society's papers and publications are held in the Bodleian deposited there in 1975. The question of women's suffrage and its relevance within the structures of the University of Oxford had been a topic of frequent discussion prior to the formal debate on the subject at the Oxford Union on 19 February 1880. Societies like the Oxford Women's Liberal Association OWLA and the Women's Emancipation Union plus the activism of Florence Davenport Hill who had been a founder member of the Bristol Women's Suffrage society in 1868 and had since moved to Headington paved the way for groups like the AEW and later the Oxford Women's Suffrage Society. The organization's work led to the founding of four women's colleges: Lady Margaret Hall and Somerville opened in 1879 followed by St Hugh's in 1886 and St Hilda's in 1893. St Anne's also originated as part of the AEW catering for female students who lived with private families in Oxford while attending courses run by the society. The AEW counted the activist Eleanor Smith 1823-1896 among its founding members and Annie Rogers 1856-1937 Oxford's first woman don as a secretary. Perhaps the most significant sections in these reports are those titled "General Statistics" which provide accounts of lectures attended by students tutorial arrangements results of examinations donations and subscriptions. The report of 1917-18 also provides a commentary on the "extension of the University Parliamentary Franchise to women who being British subjects and not subject to any legal incapacity have attained the age of thirty and have been admitted to and passed the final examination and kept under the conditions required of women by the University the period of residence necessary for a man to obtain a degree at Oxford. They are registered on specially favourable terms as the Act admitting them is so drafted that the fee of £1 for registration cannot be required of persons who are not graduates. The Register contains at present the names of 409 women." The AEW continued its activities until November 1920 when it dissolved itself as the university by admitting women to membership had taken responsibility for them. 23 issues octavo; comprising a total of 616 pages the issues c.20-30 pp. in length. Original printed paper wrappers sewn and wire-stitched as issued. Housed in a former library's dark purple cloth flat-back box with metal latch closure paper label to spine reading "Australian Council for Educational Research". Each issue complete with stamps shelf marks and labels of the Education Department Library latterly the Board of Education Library. Overall a scarce survival in very good condition. Shelfwear and creasing to wrappers those for the earliest issue detached; rear wrapper for the 1909-10 issue torn but no loss. hardcover

Extremely scarce and wonderful publication on the student-life in Oxford and Cambridge during the first half of the 19th century ! Wonderful provenance. Thomas Henry Toovey Hopkins 1831-1885 Thomas Henry Toovey Hopkins 18311885 matriculated from Trinity College in 1851 and received a Demyship at Magdalen College in 1853. He took his BA in 1856 and was elected to the fellowship in the same year. In 1858 Hopkins took his MA and was ordained Deacon. He served the college as a tutor in 185881 Bursar in 186265 1869 and 188185 Junior Dean of Arts in 1861 1867 and 1868 Vice President in 1870 and 1871 and Dean of Divinity in 187274 1877 and 1879. Hopkins was ordained a deacon in 1842 and priest in 1853. In addition to the positions Hopkins held at Magdalen he was also Curator of the University Chest in 188385 Curator of the Parks in 186285 and Delegate of the University Police in 187375. He resigned his position as Bursar at Magdalen in 1885 on account of his failing health and died at Sandown in the Isle of Wight in the same year at the age of 54. The official seal removed from the first leaf of the 'Memorandums of Association' that to the 'Articles of Association' remaining with an official stamp dated 1857. The official company 'mem and arts' with a promotional application form for a Victorian publishing firm with plans 'for the publication of a liberal and independent newspaper to be called "The Oxford Free Press." Despite seeking capital of £3000 the lofty liberal ambitions of the directors and an attempt to undercut the cover price by half of its local competitors the Oxford Free Press closed in 1858 after what The Examiner described as 'a brief and chequered existence of a little less than eight months'. These official limited liability company documents reveal the names of the company's original subscribers which included Charles Neate of Oriel College 'Professor of Political Economy' at the University and indeed holder of the Drummond Chair. . These editions of "A Commentary on the New Testament" by Thomas Coke covers the Bible's New Testament books of John through I Corinthians in Volume 2 and II Corinthians through Revelation in Volume 3. Volume 3 also contains an appendix to the book of Revelation and is indexed. The pagination is continuous in that Volume 2 picks up where Volume 1 which is absent ends. Volume 2 starts with page viii and page 697 and runs continuously through the end of Acts ending at page 1172. Pagination starts over again in Volume 2 at the beginning of the book of Romans and its preface with x-xii then continues with pages 2-292 or through the end of this Volume at the conclusion of I Corinthians. Vintage leaves possibly rhododendron are pressed between pages 2-3 of Romans. The last couple of pages of I Corinthians are detached yet present and laid in and the pagination appears complete. Volume 3 continues pagination where Volume 2 left off beginning with page 293 at the book of II Corinthians and runs all the way through the index at page 1063. xl 1172 pp. <br><br>ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Thomas Coke 1747 to 1814 as the first Methodist bishop. Born in Brecon Wales he was ordained as a priest in 1772 but expelled from his Anglican pulpit of South Petherton for being a Methodist. Coke met John Wesley in 1776. He later co-founded Methodism in America and then established the Methodist missions overseas which in the 19th century spread around the world. Wikipedia. <br><br>CONDITION: Bound in full leather these editions are very worn with discoloration chipping cracking to hinges though boards are present and still fragilely attached and headcaps and several headbands are missing. Volume 3's headband is exposed. Bookworm tunneling is evidenced within the leather covers. Spine bears five raised bands stamped in worn gilt lettering lining and gilt-tooled decoration which shows signs of erosion and some inner binding is exposed at the spines. Endpapers are plain with leather erosion to the binding at the pastedowns. The textblock is "very good". Printed on laid paper pages have fairly-evenly toned but bear foxing some offsetting occasional dampstains and discoloration throughout. Some occasional marginalia is seen particularly within the front and back endpapers and presumably from the period. A number of pages have been crinkled and creased at the edges also mainly within the front and back pages. Several minor dark mold dotting at the front corners of Volume 2's first several pages amidst a dampstain along with several tears throughout. All edges show toning scratching and discoloration. Even as these editions are only in "fair" condition with many flaws the text remains completely legible and easily readable and the vintage 1800's-feel is palpable and even distinguished. <br><br>Due to the size and weight of these volumes at nearly 10 lbs. additional postage may be required. The book was primarily written as a defence of the later work of J. M. W. Turner. Ruskin used the book to argue that art should devote itself to the accurate documentation of nature. In Ruskin's view Turner had developed from early detailed documentation of nature to a later more profound insight into natural forces and atmospheric effects. In this way Modern Painters reflects "Landscape and Portrait-Painting" 1829 in The Yankee by American art critic John Neal by distinguishing between "things seen by the artist" and "things as they are". Ruskin added later volumes in subsequent years. Volume two 1846 placed emphasis on symbolism in art expressed through nature. The second volume was influential on the early development of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. He produced three more volumes with the fifth and final volume appearing in 1860. This 1808-version of the Statutes of Oxford University is citing the important change of Statutes of 1610 in which it was decided between the Bodleian and the "Stationer's Company": "to provide a copy of all books printed to the Bodleian and in 1610 Bodley made an agreement with the company to put a copy of every book registered with them in the library". This resulted in the Bodleian collection growing "so fast that the building was expanded between 16101612 known as the Arts End and again in 16341637. When John Selden died in 1654 he left the Bodleian his large collection of books and manuscripts. The later addition to Duke Humfrey's Library continues to be known as the "Selden End"."
