Edges untrimmed small tears in the margins. Duty ink stamp in the lower right margin. Generally fresh and excellent.<br /><br /></p><p>A full-sheet Oxford Almanack for the year 1800 with lists of the kings of England starting from William the Conqueror and of the officers of the university. It is illustrated with an etching designed by Edward Dayes 1763-1804 and executed by James Basire 1730-1802. The text was engraved by James Cole active from 1764-80.<br /></p><p>The Oxford sheet almanacks were issued yearly from 1676 until 1946. To quote Petter "The value of a yearly series of illustrations such as the almanacks provide is that in them a single unbroken thread reveals the trends of development and illustrates with precision the history of art" Petter <i>The Oxford Almanack</i> 1674-1946 p. 14.</p><p>The etching depicts the Sheldonian Theatre in the middle the Clarendon Building that housed the Oxford printing house until 1830 to the left and the Ashmolean Museum now the Museum of the History of Science to the right. Dayes may have based his design on one of John Donowell's Oxford views published in 1755.</p><p>James Basire in charge of the almanacks from 1797 to 1814 came from a family of prominent engravers. He is best known for apprenticing the young William Blake. Edward Dayes a pupil of William Pether was a painter and engraver whose influence can be seen in the early drawings of J. M. W. Worn with loss boards detached stitching split with album broken into several parts. In spite of the exterior the album has preserved the contents rather well; apart from some uneven trimming to margins occasionally shaving text and worming without loss of sense to six pieces the printed material contained within is largely clean and fresh and with a few loose exceptions pasted to the album leaves.</p><p>A remarkable assembly of material relating to the elections for the two Oxford borough and two Oxfordshire county seats in the early nineteenth century largely focusing on the 1812 General Election where John Atkyns-Wright John Ingram Lockhart Francis Almeric Spencer and John Fane were respectively duly elected as Members of Parliament.</p><p>In addition to the relatively official and perfunctory handbills and posters addressed to 'Freemen of the City of Oxford' that necessarily accompanied Georgian elections this volume also highlights the cut and thrust of campaigning. Numerous mock wanted or lost notices for example 'Wanted An Upper Servant a steady Man to serve in an honourable House' mocking Francis Almeric Spencer as a Marlborough man squibs songsters often to the tune of the then popular Derry-Down' and verses.</p><p>A full list of the contents of this volume the vast majority of which was printed in Oxford and unrecorded in either COPAC or OCLC is available on request.</p> [vs.] hardcover

Secret History of the University of Oxford. Amhurst was expelled from Oxford in 1719 supposedly for his "libertinism and misconduct" but he attributed it to the university's dislike of his "persistent Whig principles and of his openly expressed hatred of toryism and of the extreme high-church party" DNB. In revenge or response he began this work as a periodical paper which appeared twice-weekly from January 11 to 6 July 1721. It is a satire on the university and university life and quite humorous in its depiction of early 18th century university life. Printed for R. Francklin unknown books
