Two volume set in slipcase. Includes Bausch & Lomb magnifying glass. Full blue cloth boards; gilt lettering on spine. The books themselves are in Very Good condition, with sharp edges and bright white pages. Slipcase shows some wear, spots,, bumps and small tears. Broken and missing plastic pull tabs inside case that are there to help pull the books out of slipcase. This extremely heavy set will require extra postage for priority or international shipping. This is the compact edition of the original 20 volume bound set of the Oxford English Dictionary, published by the Oxford University Press. The O.E.D. is the world's ultimate authority on English vocabulary, diction, usage, and etymology and includes about three-quarters of a million words.
<p>20 cm, rilegatura in pelle morbida blu con titolo in oro al piatto e dorso, piccola illustrazione dorata al piatto con squadra e compasso, tagli in oro spruzzati di blu p. (4), (4), 956; 141, XIX, (4), 9. Bella edizione massonica che conserva le istruzioni editoriali per il corretto uso e la preservazione del volume. In fondo alla seconda opera con numerazione propria "..New Oxford masonic Bible concordance.." 19 tavole illustrate in nero e 9 carte geografiche a colori. I tagli sono in oro quando il volume è chiuso ma sono tinti di blu (come la copertina) quando il libro è aperto. Stampato su carta india sottile, ottimamente conservato. Le prime quattro pagine, non compilate, stampate su cartooncino con inchiostro blu e rosso riportano alcune righe con lo spazio in cui inserire i riferimenti della loggia di appartenenza ed i confratelli che hanno accettato il nuovo membro possessore del volume .Testo in inglese, su due colonne con note al centro. Rara edizione della massoneria oxfordiana.</p>
In 16°, br. muta del tempo (dorso ricostruito), pp.VII-159. Bella guida databile attorno ai primi decenni dell'800, preziosa per le raffinate incisioni in rame di cui è adorna: 1 pianta topografica dell'Università e della città di Oxford più volte ripieg. + 4 tavv. f.t. raffiguranti alcuni particolari edifici dell'Università. La seconda parte della guida è dedicata ai dintorni della città: Blenheim Castle, Ditchley, Heythrop, Nuneham, Stow, sedi e tenute di Conti e Marchesi. Fiorit. e alcune carte uniformemente brunite, ivi comprese le tavole. Sul retro della pianta timbro di biblioteca estinta seguito da quello di annullamento. Buon es.

Though a tory Burton was not so extreme as Dr William King, principal of St Mary Hall, and under the pseudonym Phileleutherus Londinensis he criticized King's celebrated speech at the dedication of the Radcliffe Library, in Oxford, on 13 April 1749. King responded with a fierce 'Elogium famae inserviens Jacci Etonensis, or, The praises of Jack of Eton, commonly called Jack the Giant' (1750), in which he satirized 'the Burtonic style'."?(New ODNB).
