247407 March 1877; on embossed letterhead of Cuddesdon Palace Wheatley Oxon. An interesting letter revealing the nuanced position of a liberal cleric on a difficult question. See his entry in the Oxford DNB. 4pp 12mo. On bifolium. Signed ‘J. F. Oxon:’. Text clear and entire on creased and worn paper with two short closed tears at edges. Folded twice for postage. Minuted by the recipient at top of first page: ‘I read this at the Clerical. meeting - part of it’. The letter begins: ‘My dear Mr Hutchison / In cases of persons who have knowingly contracted incestuous unions in whatever degree - for the wife’s sister is no exceptional case - I always advise that the parties be not admitted to the Holy Communion while they are living together. / There is however plainly some difference in a moral point of view between the general case and those in which the parties have acted ignorantly and possibly may be still quite unconscious of wrongdoing. This difference would be ‘the more deserving of notice if the parties should be of such an age as to be no longer living together as man and wife. / Under these two conditions I should be disposed to take no notice of the error unless it were brought before me in such a way as to compel me to pronounce an opinion.’ If he is forced to ‘take notice’ he can only say ‘that they are not man and wife and cannot be man and wife but are living in fornication if they live as man and wife together.’ In the case of ‘these aged people as I understand them to be’ it is doubtful whether Hutchison is ‘under obligation to raise the question if it is not distinctly forced upon him’ and as Hutchison is ‘no longer charged with any cure of souls at Slough being the pastor of another parish’ he is ‘the less bound in conscience to open the question if the Vicar deems it wiser on the whole not to do so. Your direct responsibility is at an end.’ Mackarness observes that many of ‘these unhappy cases’ come before him and it is ‘often necessary to say quite plainly that the persons are living in incest and cannot be received to Holy Communion’. In cases where ‘the circumstances afford any way of escape from the necessity of making this declaration it seems the part of prudence and perhaps of charity to embrace it by keeping silence’. In a postscript he states that Hutchison ‘may use this letter to the Vicar if you think fit to do so.’ 7 March 1877; on embossed letterhead of Cuddesdon Palace, Wheatley, Oxon. unknown
248789 April 1974; on his letterhead as Warden of Wadham College Oxford. See his entry in the Oxford DNB. The recipient Philip Dosse was proprietor of Hansom Books publisher of a stable of seven arts magazines including Books and Bookmen and Plays and Players. See ‘Death of a Bookman’ by the novelist Sally Emerson editor of ‘Books and Bookmen’ at the time of Dosse’s suicide in Standpoint magazine October 2018. This item is 1p 4to. In good condition lightly aged and creased and folded twice for postage. Signed ‘Stuart Hampshire’. He thanks him for his letter ‘arising from the television programme with Melvyn Bragg’ and expresses agreement ‘about a boycott in South Africa. No British Government could afford the economic cost of severing economic relations with South Africa and of boycotting in that sense. Therefore it is left to artists and sportsmen and playwrights and so on to do the boycotting.’ He regrets that he has to decline the invitation to review for ‘Books and Bookmen’ which he knows ‘quite well through Martyn Goff’ as he has to ‘cut down the amount of reviewing that I do and cannot undertake any more’. 9 April 1974; on his letterhead as Warden of Wadham College, Oxford. unknown
251227 February 1896. London: 242 Portsdown Road W. 4pp 12mo. Bifolium. Aged worn and with spots of discoloration. 106 lines in a truly execrable hand. The following reading is tentative. The recipient is not named and the letter is signed ‘T. Outram Marshall’. The letter begins: ‘My dear Sir / I also read the letters in the Guardian very carefully’. There follow references to ‘the argument of a pamphlet as to the Teaching of Holy Scripture’. The third paragraph begins: ‘But to my mind the words of the Council of Arles are evidence that in 314 the Bps. there assembled believed just what our Petitioner says.’ He quotes a Latin test and discusses it. There are three long numbered objections. and three assertions are given of which ‘We are convinced’. He discusses what is the case ‘If “the High Ch. Party†is not content with the Scripture & the existing Laws of the English & whole western Ch’. He is glad that the recipient does not agree on one point ‘with the Bp. of London’ ‘But if you do not - what remains - you say the husband of this unfaithful wife - has permission to marry again - then it follows that he has permission to dissolve the bond which till he desides to do so - has not been broken. This is a wholly new theory which as yet no Bp. East or West has fulfilled. / Forgive my writing this - I want to shew you how very insecure is your foothold’. 7 February 1896. London: 242 Portsdown Road, W. unknown
24141Undated; on letterhead of the Oxford University Press Warehouse and Trade Department London. See Nicolas Barker’s typically-elegant obituary of Williamson in the Independent. 2pp 4to. The obituary of the recipient Andrew Block 1892-1987 in ‘The Private Library’ was subtitled ‘the doyen of booksellers’; his business was established in 1911. On aged and worn paper; folded three times. Signed ‘Hugh Williamson:’ and addressed to ‘Mr Block’. Thirty-one lines in a close calligraphic hand. Having been ‘particularly lucky’ every time he has called on Block and having acquired ‘the 12mo Baskerville the Pickering in Caslon’s types and the plays printed by John Bell’ on his last visit he asks him to ‘keep an eye open for one or two cheap items’. Before giving a list of books he ‘particularly’ needs from the Aldine Press to Baskerville he describes his interest ‘in the development of roman and italic types which means that most of the books I need were printed before the end of the 18th century. On the other hand I can’t really afford even a guinea for a book unless it’s the kind of thing I could sell again for as much as I gave in case of need. The result is that I’m willing to put up with bad condition in the binding missing plates and text pages etc which might put off the “proper†collector.’ Undated; on letterhead of the Oxford University Press Warehouse and Trade Department, London. unknown

26034‘Kingham April 13 1913’. Fowler’s entry in the DNB states that he resigned his tutorship in 1910 when he ‘retired to Kingham where since 1873 he had enjoyed a country home and entertained his pupils. From 1899 he lived there with his sister Alice’. On both sides of what was an 8vo leaf the lower part of which has been torn away leaving a piece roughly 20 cm square with 26 typed lines and the autograph valediction in a large bold hand ‘Yours sincerely / W. Warde Fowler’. Aged and worn but with the remaining text clear. A nice letter combining Fowler’s main interests. He begins by answering a question by the recipient explaining his reasons for gradually coming to doubt ‘the old view’ with reference to Mommsen and a work by Salvioli and giving details of his first expression of his ‘new conviction’ in a couple of publications. ‘I think there has been a change of opinion in the historical world generally since then. The diminution of corn-growing was due to several causes as it was also in England in the 16th century & onwards. No doubt foreign importation may have had something to do with it but the old assumption was that Italy was in early times a corn-growing country which I can’t believe.’ Turning to ornithology he explains that he has guests from London and that it is a ‘glorious morning’ and that they are all ‘just getting ready to go out & look for migrants &c.’ They have been ‘in woods hearing old chiffchaffs & willow-wrens & getting anemones & cowslips’. He ‘can’t hear the birds as well’ as he used to ‘but as I had a good thirty years of them I can imagine them to my satisfaction still.’ This brings the first page to where the letter has been torn away. The reverse begins abruptly: ‘the B.O.C. that Collett took Alban there the other day: but the meeting did not seem a very interesting one.’ The letter concludes with a short reference to the recipient’s marriage. ‘Kingham, April 13 1913’. unknown
