Agrégé de philosophie, Jules Simon avait été le suppléant de Victor Cousin à la Sorbonne et mena de front activités philosophiques et politiques. L'auteur, qui se disait dans les dernières années de sa vie "profondément conservateur et profondément républicain" consacre ce dernier ouvrage à la "question religieuse" : "La question religieuse pendant la Révolution et l'Empire" - "L'université et la liberté d'enseignement" - "L'école neutre", etc. Il s'élève contre la laïcisation de l'enseignement et prend position contre la politique scolaire de Jules Ferry. Très bon exemplaire, frais, bien relié.

Troisième édition, publiée l'année de l'originale, de ce recueil des principaux discours et interventions de J. Simon jusqu'en 1868. L'exposé du programme des Républicains, selon Jules Simon: séparation de l'Eglise et de l'Etat, liberté de la presse, abolition des armées permanentes, enseignement, droit de réunion..., programme qui deviendra, très largement, celui de la Troisième république. (Cf. Weill, "Histoire du parti républicain", p. 372). Très bon exemplaire, très bien relié à l'époque.

L'auteur reprend les points fondamentaux de la religion naturelle des temps modernes, tout en insistant sur sa dimension éducative (cf. J. Lagrée, 'La Religion naturelle', Paris, PUF, 1991, p. 93-101). "Simon expose la religion naturelle qui convient au philosophe (...). Il recommande un culte personnel mais renonce volontiers au culte public" (G. Weill, 'Histoire du parti républicain', p. 335-336). Mors fendus, coiffes usées, quelques rousseurs et auréoles éparses.
