Including the following works: Headling Hall originally published in 1816 and set on the country estate of Squire Harry Headling Ap-Rhaiader Esq. in Wales. Nightmare Abbey originally published in 1818 and provides a satire of nineteenth-century literary trends. Maid Marian originally published in 1822 and set in twelfth century England. Crotchet Castle originally published in 1831 and focuses on a group of eccentrics used to derive humour and social satire from Victorian interactions. All of these works have been bound together and form Volume LVII of the Standard Novels library published by Richard Bentley. Including an engraved frontispiece and a vignette title page. Collated and complete.This was the personal copy of English writer and founding member of the Bloomsbury Group Lytton Strachey noted by his bookplate to the verso of the front free-endpaper. Strachey is most known for establishing a form of biography which uses psychological insight and sympathy along with irreverence to create a unique depiction of an individual's life. He was awarded the James Tait Black Memorial Prize for his biography of Queen Victoria 1921. In the original cloth binding. Externally some shelf wear to the boards and bumping to the head and tail of the spine and extremities. Slight fading to the spine and extremities. Bouillé was a French general who served in the West Indies and distinguished himself as a commander of French forces in the American Revolution; he was the cousin of La Fayette. He was also Lieutenant-General of the Royal forces in the days of the French Revolution and remained loyal to the King playing a major role in the plan for Louis XVI's escape which ended in the King's arrest at Varennes. Bouillé escaped to England where he supported the royalist cause and where he died in 1800.<br /> These Memoires were first published in London in 1794 in translation; they were then re-translated from the English into French and published there in 1798. According the publisher of this edition Bouillé's family which consigned the original manuscript to him claims that the English translation was faulty filled with errors incomplete and disavowed by Bouillé himself.
