52 pages of poetry including black and white sketches. Circa 1935. "This volume of verse has grown out of a deep human sympathy with life as lived each day in and around the small walled city of Changli (North China) and neighboring districts. First American Edition, with "J.B.L. & Co." at the base of the spine. Original full cloth binding; beveled boards. Some loss of cloth at extremities. Very good. William Hepworth Dixon (1821-1879) was an English historian, journalist, and traveller. "Spiritual Wives" grew out of his trip to the U.S., and much of its content is about Mormonism and polygamy; but he includes interesting first hand observations on Robert Owen's community, and other places in the U.S. where Free Love, Communalism, and Socialism are practiced. At the end of the book appears an essay in German on Pietism. Quite a remakable book. L19
