Light toning to free endpapers and foxing tissue guard otherwise a very clean & neat copy with only minor rubbing to spine tips; near fine condition. Peacock's final novel centres on Gregory Gryll whose plan to pass his estate onto his niece is thwarted by her inability to find a husband to meet her exacting standards. Complete with a gorgeous richly embossed peacock pattern to the front board and to the spine. All edges gilt. Rather like the Jane Austen Pride and Prejudice 'peacock' binding which from memory was also published by Macmillan. The tail of the spine a little bumped as is the lower front board corner. A slight bump to the head of the spine. A near contemporaneous 1903 neat black gift ink inscription to the head of the half-title page.
