Dans cette étude pionnière en matière de démographie scientifique, l’auteur analyse les causes de l’effondrement de la population française sur les bases de données statistiques: guerres, entretien des colonies, émigration, célibat (prêtres, soldats), prison, enfermement et peine de mort, maladies, etc. Il propose des mesures pour renverser cette tendance. L’ouvrage est le premier à élaborer l’indicateur de "taux net de reproduction". Le livre a été condamné au feu par arrêt du parlement le 28 février 1769. (Einaudi, n° 979. I.N.E.D., n°1017. Première édition française de ‘Dissertation on the Numbers of Mankind in Ancient and Modern Times', traduit par le chevalier de Jaucourt, peut-être sous la supervision de Montesquieu, publiée un an après l'originale anglaise. Le traducteur, Louis de Jaucourt (1704 -1780), était un collaborateur savant, prolifique et assidu de l'Encyclopédie de Diderot et D'Alembert. Dans l’article "France" de l’Encyclopédie, il affirma hautement que "les provinces se dépeuplent excessivement". L'une des premières grandes spéculations, au XVIIIe siècle, sur l'évolution de la population mondiale, qui ouvrit une controverse entre l'auteur et Hume. S'appuyant sur calculs et statistiques, Wallace réfute les théories sur l'accroissement indéfini de la population en la mettant en relation avec la quantité des subsistances, la nature, la fertilité et le partage des terres, la santé publique, les moeurs, la politique économique des Etats, etc. Il aborde la question de l'optimum de population et traite des moyens d'y parvenir. Cet ouvrage exerça une influence majeure sur Malthus et sur les études démographiques en France. The passing in June 1830 of a parliamentary 'Act for taking an Account of the Population of Great Britain and of the Increase or Diminution thereof'see Item 14 directed that the overseers of the poor should 'take an Account of the Number of Persons found within each Parish and Place'. This measure was seen by the Whig government and in particular by Lord John Russell as providing vital information preparatory to the passing of the Parliamentary Reform Bill. The present collection not only presents a body of information regarding the overseers see Item 6: 'By referring to the population returns you will see which of the Overseers have signed them as we have no other way of coming at the knowledge of it.' but also provides an insight into the workings of local government at a period of historic change in British government.27 items all clear and complete and all but the last see Item 16 below in excellent condition on lightly-aged paper. First and only edition of this extremely rare administrative report of Diyarbakir Province after the first census of the Republican Turkey. The 1927 Turkey census was held on 28 October 1927 and became the first census in the history of the Turkish Republic. This book contains administrative results reported according to the results of this census across Diyarbakir Province. The Vilayet of Diyarbakir was created in 1867. In 1867 or 1868, Mamuret-ul-Aziz and the Kurdistan Eyalet merged with and joined the Vilayet of Diyarbakir. In 1879-80 Mamuret-ul-Aziz was separated again from the Vilayet of Diyarbakir, and turned into the Vilayet of Mamuret-ul-Aziz. It was one of the six Armenian Vilayets of the Empire. "Dans cet ouvrage publié à l'occasion du procès de J.-B. Carrier, l'auteur des noyades et massacres de Nantes, Gracchus Babeuf, père du communisme, soulève la question de la nature de la répression perpétrée par la Convention en Vendée. Ce livre doublement révolutionnaire, par son contenu et par son titre, se présente comme un réquisitoire très documenté et d'une incroyable modernité contre la politique dictatoriale menée par les Conventionnels et Robespierre" (Ed. du Cerf).
