18215560Massachusetts 1821. Beautifully hand-colored manuscript on one sheet with all text to recto. Measuring 245 x 215mm. Retaining its bright colors; with chipping and loss to all edges not affecting images or text. A unique tribute by a mother to her late daughter.<br /> <br /> The bright colors and floral arrangements of the present piece suggest that it was originally intended to document joyful family milestones. Titled "Register" its first section declares that it is of "the Family of Adolphus Draper who was born August & Married Belinda Axtell Sept. 18th 1816 who was born July 9th 1797." Below this is added less happy news however. "Sacred to the memory of Rebeckah Draper only child of Adolphus & Belinda Draper who was born Oct. 5th 1817 & departed this life August 26th 1821." In contrast to the piece's visual vibrancy Belinda adds a final verse to the piece's foot: "Rebeckah tho thou art in heaven and we on earth May this one hope delight us That thou will hail our second birth When death shall unite us. Where worlds no more can sever Parents & child forever."<br /> <br /> A unique and tragic piece of maternal history available for further research into family genealogy child mortality rates and causes of death the symbolic significance of illustrated flowers and maternal mourning practices of the period. unknown

ABOUT THE BOOK:- The human has always prided himself as an exceptional 'moral species' but has always been haunted by two questions: 'Why am I not good when I want to be'; 'Why do I do bad when I don't want to'. This is at the heart of what scriptures and sages have long alluded to as the eternal internal struggle—between good and evil—that wages in the human consciousness. The book posits that much of our confusion and angst stems from our inability to recognize the ramifications of this 'war' between two sides of our own 'self'. It is because we are ignoring this war that we are losing all other wars of the world. That 'ignorance' is the primary source of all the horrors, malevolence and violence that fill us with so much dread. But a 'favorable' outcome is possible only if the forces of goodness are aided to get an upper hand consistently—and that calls for two cathartic changes: consciousness-change by inducing a turn from the mind to the heart; and contextual-change, by radically reconstructing the roles of morality, money, and mortality in our everyday lives. The book offers a menu of insights and options we all can use to tilt the scales in the war waging inside each of us. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Bhimeswara R Challa is a native of India and a 'double-retiree', one from the elite Indian Administrative Service (IAS) and the other from the United Nations. During a career stretched over forty years, he shouldered multiple responsibilities, from the grassroots to the global, which gave him at once an insider's depth and an outsider's objectivity. Alongside, he has been a part-time but passionate writer and has published two novels, Kshanayulu (The Pardonables) and Aprasyulu (The Ostracized) in his mother tongue (Telugu) and several articles in newspapers and journals in India, UK and USA. His previous, full-length scholarly non-fiction book was the critically-acclaimed Man's Fate and God's Choice—an Agenda for Human Transformation (2011). This second book is, in a sense and in spirit, its sequel. The Title 'The War Within – Between Good and Evil : Reconstructing Morality, Money, and Mortality written/authored/edited by Bhimeswara Challa', published in the year 2020. The ISBN 9788121219792 is assigned to the Hardcover version of this title. This book has total of pp. 704 (Pages). The publisher of this title is Gyan Publishing House. This Book is in English. 1665148683London: printed and are to be sold by E. Cotes 1665. The great plague of 1665 First edition of this complete annual sequence of the London bills of mortality for 20 December 1664 to 19 December 1665 issued at the height of the Great Plague. First instituted in 1592 and placed under the control of the Worshipful Company of Parish Clerks in 1611 the bills formed the essential statistical substrate for John Graunt's Natural and Political Observations Made upon the Bills of Mortality 1662 the foundational work of modern medical statistics. Graunt 1629-1674 a member of the Common Council of London had analysed mortality data for several years before publishing his seminal study which had already reached its second edition with a third in press by 1665. Wing attributes London's Dreadful Visitation to "John Graunt of Bucklersbury" an author of religious tracts but not of statistical works; this is almost certainly a misattribution for the celebrated statistician. Most bibliographies cite the work anonymously. The work was printed for the Parish Clerks' Company by Ellen Eleanor Cotes active 1652-70 widow and executor of Richard Cotes the City of London's official printer. Surveyed in 1668 she was operating three presses with two apprentices and nine pressmen at the Barbican. Both she and her husband produced notable medical books illustrated with large anatomical plates including translations of works by Ambroise Paré and Adriaan van de Spiegel. Cotes contributed the prefatory note "The Printer to the Reader" "I am a Printer no Preacher". Two issues are distinguished by title-page dating: one as here begins "the 20th. of December"; the other "the 27th. of December". Although the folding table is described in the title as integral Goldsmiths' catalogues it separately as a broadside nos. 1759 and 1760 the latter with mourning border. While not exceptionally rare copies are typically found worn defective or lacking the folding table; sound examples are uncommon. Bound up with it are two scarce related broadsides and a copy of Roger Drake Sacred Chronologie 1648 pp. 44; ESTC R206239. Further details of these are available on request. Small quarto 222 x 172 mm. Folding table at rear titled "A general Bill for this present year ending the 19th of December 1665.". Title page text set within a thick black woodcut border decorated with memento mori motifs including a skull-and-crossbones crowned with a winged hourglass under a banner lettered "Memento mori" plus bones picks and spades and full skeletons and three coats of arms above the imprint; woodcut headpieces initials; arms of the Parish Clerk's Company running throughout. Bound with 3 other items in late 18th-century continental half parchment marbled boards labelled "Pot Pourri" and numbered "2" in black. Spine ends lightly rubbed front joint largely cracked but board still holding firmly; blank upper margin of title a little creased very occasional light spotting or rust marks; an excellent copy with several uncut edges. Garrison-Morton 5119 27th issue; Goldsmiths' 1761 27th; Kress 1160 27th; Norman 1386 27th; Wing G-1598A issue not differentiated. hardcover
