Pollack & Todd point out that he was the first to use “the virile image of enhanced American masculinity to sell a weekly course delivered by mail on a multimillion-dollar scale.†Liederman’s claims became more outlandish as the business expanded and in 1929 his “palpably false†ads attracted the attention of the Federal Trade Commission and he was forced to cease-and-desist abandoning $ 100000 in advertisements and the business failed during the Great Depression.
