To unveil the mysterious phenomenon of ritual possession known as tarantism, the author carefully reconstructs the history of medical and naturalistic sciences concerning it. His study of the vast scientific debate which involved physicians, philosophers and naturalists dealing with a phenomenon which apparently belonged to the fields of toxicology and physiology leads him to the conclusion that the cultural origin of tarantism marks the beginnings of clinical psychiatry. 628 gr. xxiv-324 p.
