Allen's foreword states his reasons for issuing a new edition including renewed interest in the opium question spurred by "the recent discoveries of immense quantities of gold in California and Australia which must have a very powerful effect upon the Chinese nation and clothe with new interest everything affecting the welfare of that great people." Allen 1813-1889 was trained at the Pennsylvania Medical College and practiced most of his life in Lowell where he had a reputation as a reformer and guardian of public health a crusader for the promotion of preventive medicine especially among the working class for background see American Journal of Public Health vol 93 no. 5 May 2003 p.720ff. Come funzionano anfetamine e metanfetamine ed è vero che fanno cascare i denti? La morfina era in origine una medicina usata per curare la dipendenza da oppio e l'eroina era in origine una medicina usata per curare la dipendenza da morfina. Serve dire altro?
