24046701Burma Siam ca 1900-1920s. A set of copper & brass scales hand made contained in a two-part wooden case with three elephants carved in the top 16.5 x 7.5 cm. closed with a brass ring scale bowls 4.5 cm. diameter balance bar 11 cm. . . . HAND-MADE . . A lovely period piece entirely hand-made. This charming and unique ethnic piece came from the Golden Triangle area. . The case has a pivot point at the elephant's tail end. It opens by separating the two halves as if a clam-shell. Contained within the box is a matching carved form exactly matching the whole scale and its two brass bowls. . The bowls are tied with four purple dyed strings attached to each end of the copper balance bar. Held in the center by another string the pointer will balance to the exact center done with great & fine precision and accuracy. . One simply puts opium in one side and a counter balance in the other to get an exact weight measurement. . Likely the work of Karens or other Golden triangle tribes. Articles of this caliber and period are quite scarce. . Color photos are posted to our website. . . unknown
