Usual foxing and tanning and some occasional light water staining binding rubbed one label chipped but a sound copy with a pencil sketch of a soldier in uniform on the rear endsheet. The first volume of this periodical - consisting of 24 numbers dated 9 Sept. 1829 - 25 Aug. 1830. Published by John Bell. It would appear a total of four volumes were published with eventual participation of D.F. Condie. OCLC/Worldcat locates volumes one through four at the British Library. Apart from that only two other locations appear there NYPL and Pennsylvania Historical and like the present example the entry of record for those locations bears the denotation "4th improved edition." A substantial number of the articles refer to tobacco use others to intoxicants and one to opium use: "A hint to snuff-takers" p. 14. "Tobacco consumption in France and England" p. 27. Dramatic and scarce engraving depicting the destruction of the Canton Factories principal site of Western trade with China at the onset of the Second Opium War 1856-1860 by a 25 year old Gustave Doré. He contributed to the "Illustrated Times" a chief rival to the monopoly of "The Illustrated London News". Whilst the self-taught Doré did not enjoy initial success in France for Victorian Britons Doré's art was celebrated producing with Blanchard Jerrold his landmark account of mid Victorian London "London: a pilgrimage" over four years 1869-1872. <br> <br>From the Estate of the late collector and scholar Arthur Hacker. . Three engravings on a double newspaper leaf the main image 16.5 x 51.3 cm with complete associated text central fold a few minor edge tears and two central fold splits neatly sealed on the verso but in very good condition. Engravings depicting the Battle of Canton Guangzhou 28-31 December 1857 led by joint British and French forces during the Second Opium War prepared for "The Illustrated London News". The main engraving shows the bombardment from the Harbour with the European Factories still in tact by artist and engraver Richard Principal Leitch his signature is reversed in the image who worked for "The Illustrated London News" for over 30 years from the 1840s. <br> <br>From the Estate of the late collector and scholar Arthur Hacker with his pencilled note in the lower corner. . Le livre du docteur Nguyen est un manuel du fumeur d’opium : examen préparatoire, mécanisme et manipulation, art du fumeur, effets psychiques, théorie psychologique. Conclusion : “Les blancs, pour échapper à la tentation de la fée noire, n’ont qu’à rester paisiblement chez eux.”Un des 200 exemplaires sur beau papier.

42112501China ca 1875-80's.Chinese opium scale contained in a hand made Bamboo clam-shell case end pivot the inside matches the exact form of the scale & bone measure barcase:27 x 6.5 cm.brass bowl:5.6 cm. bone bar 24.5 cm. RARE & COMPLETE . . . SIMA CHINESE SCALE . . . AN EXCELLENT EXAMPLE OF VINTAGE NATIVE . . . CREATIVITY & WORKMANSHIP . . . USING BONE BRASS COPPER & BAMBOO WOOD MATERIAL . . A lovely piece of native workmanship. The "violin-shaped" wooden top and bottom cases was carved to match the scales quite precisely with a grooves to accommodate the scale bone measurement bar the brass counter weight and copper ring lock. . To unlock & open one simply slides the copper ring to the far end. Then pivot the top side up or down to open. . The whole case is kept tightly closed by sliding the copper ring back to the left to lock the covers closed. . At one end of the bone measurement bar is a brass pointer & hook to measure accuracy the bar has many graduations to indicate various weights in ten's. . The brass bowl is held fast with buff colored strings carefully tied to the bone measure bar. . The counter balance is an oval brass piece with a hole and tie thread to adjust along the bone measure bar. . The square brass counter balance is slid along the bone bar until the scale is balanced rendering the weight reading. Simple but accurate ! One holds the bone bar by use of the black thread. . This practical object has been used for centuries throughout Asia and S.E. Asia in most all cultures. . This example made from two matching Bamboo parts is quite quaint and unusual. The patina is quite fine showing a nice color after more than a century of use nicely polished and smooth. . The scale is contained in a crimson velvet bag with draw strings. . Color photos are posted to our website. . CONDITION: The scale is contained in a hand-made Bamboo wooden case with typical signs of use age and wear. It is complete intact and a good working example. . The inside also shows normal use age and dustiness typical of a vintage and genuine item. . In original condition still easily used as it has been for more than a century. . Nicely done work. . REFERENCES: . Dr. Horwitz regrets relying on memory; describes the collection preparation appearance consistency and odor of "good fresh" opium. He discusses the preparation and use of infusions tinctures brown powder and beneficial effects in small doses. Despite his opening remarks it seems Dr. Horwitz has considerable experience in the use of opium along and in combination with calomel in connection with numerous ailmetns. unknown
