42112501China ca 1875-80's.Chinese opium scale contained in a hand made Bamboo clam-shell case end pivot the inside matches the exact form of the scale & bone measure barcase:27 x 6.5 cm.brass bowl:5.6 cm. bone bar 24.5 cm. RARE & COMPLETE . . . SIMA CHINESE SCALE . . . AN EXCELLENT EXAMPLE OF VINTAGE NATIVE . . . CREATIVITY & WORKMANSHIP . . . USING BONE BRASS COPPER & BAMBOO WOOD MATERIAL . . A lovely piece of native workmanship. The "violin-shaped" wooden top and bottom cases was carved to match the scales quite precisely with a grooves to accommodate the scale bone measurement bar the brass counter weight and copper ring lock. . To unlock & open one simply slides the copper ring to the far end. Then pivot the top side up or down to open. . The whole case is kept tightly closed by sliding the copper ring back to the left to lock the covers closed. . At one end of the bone measurement bar is a brass pointer & hook to measure accuracy the bar has many graduations to indicate various weights in ten's. . The brass bowl is held fast with buff colored strings carefully tied to the bone measure bar. . The counter balance is an oval brass piece with a hole and tie thread to adjust along the bone measure bar. . The square brass counter balance is slid along the bone bar until the scale is balanced rendering the weight reading. Simple but accurate ! One holds the bone bar by use of the black thread. . This practical object has been used for centuries throughout Asia and S.E. Asia in most all cultures. . This example made from two matching Bamboo parts is quite quaint and unusual. The patina is quite fine showing a nice color after more than a century of use nicely polished and smooth. . The scale is contained in a crimson velvet bag with draw strings. . Color photos are posted to our website. . CONDITION: The scale is contained in a hand-made Bamboo wooden case with typical signs of use age and wear. It is complete intact and a good working example. . The inside also shows normal use age and dustiness typical of a vintage and genuine item. . In original condition still easily used as it has been for more than a century. . Nicely done work. . REFERENCES: . The Wellcome Historical Medical Museum and Library: CHINESE MEDICINE AN EXHIBITION ILLUSTRATING THE TRADITIONAL MEDICINE OF CHINA exhibit text & photo numbers 233. Full-page engraving 23.5 x 33.6 cm including caption on a single newspaper leaf relevant text on the verso edge tears no loss and creasing in very good condition. Dramatic and scarce engraving depicting the destruction of the Canton Factories principal site of Western trade with China at the onset of the Second Opium War 1856-1860 by a 25 year old Gustave Doré. He contributed to the "Illustrated Times" a chief rival to the monopoly of "The Illustrated London News". Whilst the self-taught Doré did not enjoy initial success in France for Victorian Britons Doré's art was celebrated producing with Blanchard Jerrold his landmark account of mid Victorian London "London: a pilgrimage" over four years 1869-1872.

From the Estate of the late collector and scholar Arthur Hacker. .
