Qui comincia il racconto delle sorelle Østby, Hilde e Ylva, rispettivamente scrittrice e neuropsicologa. Le autrici presentano un'affascinante carrellata di casi ed esperimenti: ecco quindi la vicenda di due pazienti straordinari, Solomon Seresevskij, «l'uomo che non dimenticava nulla», e Henry Molaison, incapace di ricordare e condannato a vivere in un eterno presente. Hilde e Ylva Østby ridefiniscono la visione più comune della memoria: ben lungi dall'essere una riproduzione fedele del nostro passato, i ricordi subiscono una costante rielaborazione e intessono un «biocopione», una sceneggiatura della vita che riscriviamo di continuo e che si proietta nel futuro.
