19873161<p>A unique copy of the decorative facsimile edition of the 1899 Hollander translation presented to the then UK Secretary of State for Defence George Younger by the Norwegian Secretary of Defence Johan Jorgen Holst. There is an ink inscription at the half title page: 'To George Younger. With best wishes and warm friendship in the Post-Viking era. From Norwegian Secretary of Defence Sept 26 1988'. Holst went on to become Minister of Foreign Affairs and was a member of the 4 person Norwegian team that facilitated the Oslo Accord - an agreement between Israel and the PLO Palestine Liberation Organisation in 1993. The book is in the original full leather binding which has blind stamped and gilt decoration to the spine and boards. All page edges gilted. The spine is slightly faded and there is a small scuff to the decoration at the top of the front board and 2 longer scuffs near the side edge of the back board. It is very clean sound and bright having been protected by a cloth-covered slipcase. The slipcase has gilt titles and design to the back and one side. The cloth is rubbed with some fraying to the back and some marking. There is light rubbing to the cloth elsewhere. Internally the book is in fine clean condition with the original page marker and an extra loose leather marker with the same design as the binding inscribed in gilt 'With compliments from the Royal Norwegian Ministry of Defence'. Contents: inscribed half title; rubricated title; family tree; 1899 facsimile title; notes xxxi; contents list; Snorri's foreward with illustration; text 5-663 with illustrations; index 665-685; double page map of the Baltic Countries and Scandinavia 800-1200AD. A near fine copy the binding square and firm with a little bumping to the corners the upper board with a small glue mark to the centre the cloth is otherwise bright and fresh. The contents are clean throughout and without previous owner's marks. Complete wih the very lightly rubbed dustwrapper that is without fading loss or tears. Not price-clipped £7.95 net to the lower front flap. Inscribed by the Roald Dahl in black ink on the front endpaper "To Lesley / Love / Roald / Dec. 1983". A collection of 14 ghost stories chosen by Roald Dahl out from the 749 supernatural tales he read at the British Museum whilst working to develop an American television programme that would feature dramatisations of some of the stories. A pilot written by Dahl based on E. F. Benson's 'The Hanging of Alfred Wadham' was filmed but never released due to concerns that it would offend the American Catholic Church.
