From the publisher: "What in Winnicott s theoretical matrix was truly revolutionary for psychoanalysis In this book the editor and contributors provide a rare in-depth analysis of his original work and highlight the specifics of his contribution to the concept of early psychic development which revolutionised the theory and practice of psychoanalysis. Including re-publications of selected Winnicott papers to set the scene for the themes and explorations in subsequent chapters the book examines how Winnicott expanded Freud s work and how his discourse with Melanie Klein sharpened his thought and clinical innovations. Divided into 3 sections it covers: Introductory overviews on the evolution of Winnicott s theoretical matrix. Personal perspectives from eminent psychoanalysts on how Winnicott s originality inspired their own work Further recent examinations and extensions including new findings from the archives. Drawing on her own extensive knowledge of Winnicott and the expertise of the distinguished contributors Jan Abram shows us how Winnicott s contribution constitutes a major psychoanalytic advance to the concept of subjectivity. As such it will be an inspiration to experienced psychoanalysts psychotherapists and all those interested in human nature and emotional development.". First Edition. Hardcover. From the dust jacket: "Thirty-five years ago Don Ford and Hugh Urban to the acclaim of critics worldwide presented the psychotherapeutic community with its first systematic comparative analysis of all major psychotherapeutic theories. Since then psychotherapy has experienced sweeping changes. The number of recognized therapeutic approaches now stands at over 400. Pressured by a results-minded public and increasingly budget-conscious insurers today's therapists rarely adhere strictly to one approach; instead they borrow freely from 'whatever works.' But in the face of such a whirlwind of theories jargon and methodologies how does one begin to decide what really works Enter Contemporary Models of Psychotherapy Second Edition. This thoroughly revised and updated Second Edition of Ford and Urban's 1963 classic does more than identify and compare today's most widely used approaches to psychotherapy. It provides therapists with a powerful analytical tool for looking beneath the surface of theories and for answering such crucial questions as: How are the different therapeutic theories similar and dissimilar How can I tell a sound one from a faulty one How do I decide which approach is more effective Can different approaches be used for different problems Can I successfully combine different approaches and if so how In Section I the authors explore the nature of theory construction and develop a rigorous analytical framework for comparing therapeutic systems. Representing a person as a unified structural/functional system the framework interrelates all key biological psychosocial behavioral and environmental aspects of human development and change. In Section II Ford and Urban group the 400 approaches into eight families on the basis of their underlying metaphysical and existing logical assumptions: psychoanalytic; object relations self-psychology and interpersonal; humanistic/existential including experiential gestalt and person-centered; behavioral; cognitive; cognitive-behavioral and skill training; behavioral medicine and health; and eclectic integrative. They then analyze exemplars of each approach in terms of core metaphysical and epistemological issues conceptual models aspects of humans emphasized propositional models dynamics of change and maintenance of stable patterns of functioning and therapeutic procedures. Section III is devoted to consideration of the similarities and dissimilarities of the different approaches and their implications for the future development of psychotherapy. Providing the information and tools for making informed decisions about today's most influential therapeutic systems Contemporary Models of Psychotherapy Second Edition is an important resource for all mental health students practitioners and educators.". 1925001989New York: The Macmillan Company 1925. Spine ends lightly frayed. Tiny damp stain to lower page corners in the margin only - text is not affected else Very Good condition. Square tight copy. Illustrated with 200 action photographs. This copy has the bookplate of New York psychiatrist Dr. Dudley D. Schoenfeld a pioneer in the field of criminal profiling who was instrumental in solving The Crime of the Century. Just after Charles Lindbergh's baby was kidnapped and well before the arrest of Bruno Richard Hauptmann Dr. Schoenfeld was asked by the authorities to examine the ransom notes and other evidence. Dr. Schoenfeld was able to "construct" a profile of the person who committed the crime. While compilation of a psychological profile is common practice in criminal investigations today in 1932 it was ground-breaking. Dr. Schoenfeld conclusions that the ransom notes were likely written by a German man with a criminal past and that he was probably mechanically adept proved to be surprisingly accurate. . This book is from the library of Alonzo Church -- regarded by many as the greatest American logician of the 20th century. We were lucky enough to purchase several dozen books from his library at auction in New Jersey. Several of them contain his signature or a presentation inscription to him. Unfortunately this copy does not. However laid-in is a review request. The review slip is addressed to: "Book Review Editor Journal of Symbolic Logic." Church not only founded the Journal of Symbolic Logic but was an editor of its reviews section from 1936 until 1979. Please check our inventory for other books from Prof. Church's library including several signed by him. Alonzo Church 1903 - 1995 was professor of mathematics at Princeton University 1929-1967 and of mathematics and philosophy at UCLA 1967-1990. He was the founding editor of the JOURNAL OF SYMBOLIC LOGIC. Among his most influential contributions are Church's Theorem Church's Thesis and the Lambda Calculus. His work was of major importance in mathematical logic recursion theory theoretical computer science and functional programming languages in general. Professor Church's creation of lambda calculus was the foundation for the LISP programming language and provided the semantic model for ALGOL. He was elected to the National Academy of Sciences British Academy and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. For more on Church's contributions see items 250 251 321 394 and 533 in Hook and Norman's ORIGINS OF CYBERSPACE A LIBRARY ON THE HISTORY OF COMPUTING.
