Il nevrotico si trova in opposizione alla verità assoluta più del normale, a causa del sentimento di inferiorità, le origini del quale risalgono ad un'infanzia difficile e penosa. Questo sentimento apre le porte a ogni genere di errori che esercitano una influenza decisiva sullo sviluppo psichico. L'idea fittizia che l'individuo si fa della sua personalità si manifesta anche nella costruzione del carattere nervoso e nella formazione dei sintomi nervosi. The psychic evolution of the individual and the deviations it undergoes (neurosis and psychosis) are determined by the attitude that he adopts in the face of the inflexible logic of social life. It is from the intensity of this deviation, that is, from the lack of adaptation to cosmic and social needs, that both nature and the intensity of mental disorders depend. The neurotic finds himself in opposition to absolute truth more than normal, because of the feeling of inferiority, the origins of which date back to a difficult and painful childhood. This feeling opens the door to all sorts of errors that exert a decisive influence on psychic development. The fictitious idea that the individual makes of his personality also manifests itself in the construction of the nervous character and in the formation of nervous symptoms. Every stretch of psychic life is permeated with a finalist dynamism.

Die »erste Generation«, die Eltern dieser Kriegskinder, waren im »Dritten Reich« herangewachsen. Gegenüber ihren Kindern sprachen sie nicht von den Ereignissen, vor allem nicht von der Bedeutung, die diese Zeit und dieser Krieg für sie hatte, den sie miterlebt, mitgemacht oder in dem sie mitgewußt hatten. Mit der Deklaration der »Stunde Null« schnitten sie ihre Erinnerungen, ihre Geschichte ab; sie erstarrten in Schweigen, die Fragen der Kinder blieben unbeantwortet.
