1931141113Melbourne: Stream 1931. First Edition. Paperback. Fair. Melbourne Stream 1931. Small quarto 48 pages. Three-colour pictorial wrappers a little stained and worn but now expertly conserved; minor signs of age and use shallow light tidemarks to most leading edges some contemporary pencilling; overall a decent copy of a rare item. The first issue of this short-lived avant-garde journal it folded after Volume I Number 3 September 1931 together with a copy of the original prospectus small quarto a bifolium with a three-colour illustration on the first page slightly marked and lightly nibbled around the edges. The striking modernist cover design for the prospectus and the first two issues is by Jack Maughan. <p>'"Stream" answered remarkably well a particular need - which will always be present in Australia - the need for good translations of current European writing. It printed translations done by Australians of stories essays and poems contributed to European periodicals by such leading overseas writers artists and musicians as Georges Ribemont-Dessaignes Fernand Leger Arthur Honegger Valentin Katayev Mayakovski Frederic Lefevre Carmelo Puglionisi and "Azorin" José Martinez Ruiz. "Stream" also through its poetry editor Bertram Higgins aroused interest in the spare ironical intellectual poetry of Eliot and of the French symbolists who preceded him . "Stream" was unable to last for more than three issues partly because of the depression and partly because in editor Pearl's words "the self-appointed business manager got away with all the subscription money"' John Tregenza: 'Australian Little Magazines 1923-1954' pages 39-44 including a full-page illustration of the cover artwork of Number 3 'the work of the gifted young Melbourne artist Dominic Leon who was killed not long afterwards in a street accident'. 2 items. 2002164419東宝. Toho Film. circa2002. Colour poster 72.5 x 52cm. Very good copy. This poster was published as part of the promotion of the 2002 release of the remastered DVD editions of this 1942 Japanese film. Various scenes from the film are featured in order to reproduce the atmosphere during the Pacific War. The original film was immensely popular in Japan when it was first released in 1942 as it depicted Japanese victories in Hawaii and Malaya. The film was directed by Kajiro Yamamoto with special effects used in its depiction of the Pearl Harbour attack and Malayan sea battles created by Eiji Tsuburaya who eventually went on to produce films such as Godzilla series and other monster films. The original special effects in the film was innovative as miniature recreations of the scenes were merged with the original news reel films showing the battles. . 東宝. [Toho Film] unknown
178239Japan. No date. Late 20th Century. Very long striking blue and white scroll showing the Japanese fleet that attacked Pearl Harbor. Scale: 1:1000. Occasional light marking but overall in very good condition. 53 x 304 cm. An intriguing representational print that displays the entire Japanese fleet that attacked Pearl Harbor in December 1941. An exceptionally long print approximately 300cm in length and 53cm in width presented as a scroll with roller at one end every one of the 11 warships and 30 submarines involved in the Pearl Harbor campaign are depicted in an abstract form each with a caption giving their name. Some ships also bear the names of their commanders. It's highly probable that this scroll was created to commemorate the attack in the post-Pacific War era. . unknown
