A letter to a Mrs Gully about obtaining tickets for an American friend who was the private secretary to Cornelius Vanderbilt. Pearl Mary Teresa Richards 1867 - 1906 was an Anglo-American novelist and dramatist who wrote under the pen-name of John Oliver Hobbes. Though her work fell out of print in the twentieth century her first book Some Emotions and a Moral was a sensation in its day selling eighty thousand copies in only a few weeks. Cyril Pearl was a Vermont-based pro-colonization abolitionist who feuded locally with William Lloyd Garrison on the subject of colonization and acted as a publishing agent in Vermont for the Boston-based The Colonizationist and Journal of Freedom a short-lived publication published from 1833-1834 by George W. Light in Boston. In this work Pearl - writing anonymously - takes issue with Garrison’s Thoughts on African Colonization pamphlet and makes a case for African colonization. We find little information on Pearl save for a mention or two in correspondence relating to Garrison. unknown
