1971GC-001
Pearl Bailey signed this 1971 Harcourt Brace Jovanovich first edition of her memoir — a book as warm candid and soulful as the woman herself. Bailey was one of the defining figures of mid-twentieth century Black American entertainment: Tony Award winner for Hello Dolly on Broadway USO stalwart actress and a genuine ambassador of joy across five decades of American public life. She wrote Talking to Myself the way she sang — with complete honesty and no pretense.

The signature reads "Love to all — Pearl Bailey" in blue ink on the title page verso. First edition hardcover dust jacket intact with light age-appropriate edge wear pages show yellowing consistent with a 1971 printing. No missing pages no dog-ears.

This book is from the personal collection of Captain Thomas Goode a Black United States Air Force officer who was shot down in Cambodia and who spent his lifetime and considerable means pursuing signed books directly from their authors. He regularly traveled for the purpose of acquiring books and having them autographed in person. The collection is being liquidated through his estate by Joanne O'Donnell his U.S. military-designated beneficiary and power of attorney. A notarized affidavit from James O'Donnell sworn before an Alameda County California notary public on April 17 2026 attests under penalty of perjury to the provenance and authenticity of the entire collection.

AI signature analysis returned AUTHENTIC at 70% confidence.

Biblio Listing Fields:

• SKU/Book ID: GC-001

• Title: Talking to Myself — Signed First Edition

• Author: Pearl Bailey

• Price: $125

• ISBN: 0-15-187990-7

• Publisher: Harcourt Brace Jovanovich

• Year: 1971

• Format/Binding: Hardcover

• Book Condition: Very Good

• Jacket Condition: Very Good — intact light edge wear appropriate to age

• First Edition: Yes

• Signed: Yes

• Signed: Yes — inscribed "Love to all — Pearl Bailey" in blue ink on title page verso

• First Edition: Yes — first printing

• Dust Jacket: Present — Very Good condition light edge wear

• Binding: Tight and square

• Pages: Yellowed appropriate to 1971 printing; clean and unmarked

• Authentication: Notarized affidavit Alameda County CA April 17 2026; AI analysis AUTHENTIC 70%

• Keywords: Pearl Bailey signed autobiography African American entertainment history
Harcourt Brace Jovanovich hardcover

Her novel The Good Earth won the Pulitzer Prize and in 1938 she was the first American woman to win the Nobel Prize for Literature.

Buck's works set in China come from her first-hand experience living there.
