Pearl Bailey’s career in show business began at the young age of 15 having won an amateur contest leading to her Broadway debut in the musical St. Louis Woman for which she won an award for “most promising newcomer of 1946.†She also won a Tony Award for her performance in the title role of an all-Black cast of Hello Dolly! She went on to a successful career as a jazz singer appearing occasionally in films and television.
