A hint of toning and spotting the text-block. Free from reassures bookplates and inscriptions. The WRAPPER is complete and is in Very Good condition. Some small losses to the spine ends and corners more-so at the upper spine tip but not involving any lettering. A little light spotting and age related markings in places. The wrapper artwork by Pearl Binder is striking in the removable Brodart archival cover. Black-and-white illustrations some full pages throughout. Writer illustrator folklorist an artist Pearl Binder's wildly scarce book which seeks to document the London lives of 10 individual types of EastEnders. Binder builds vivid and hilarious and often irreverent portrait of ten London characters of the early 1930s. These include an ostler named Bill a keeper of horses usually at inns but in this case for the Tower of London who began his work life as 'a butter slapper' ; a phrenologist the White Chapel Bell Foundry workers notable that there is a cause to try still to save the foundry today ; the wax workers of Madame Tussaud's a Bloomsbury bohemian an antique dealer a sex worker assigned the name Poule de Luxe by Binder a mixed race woman running an illegal Chinese lottery game called 'Pukka-Poo'. Parts of the book are certainly laugh-out-loud funny and the character descriptions are rich. Her portrait of 'the bohemian' describes a man named Basil who 'had learned by now to scoffr at everything except Picasso Cocteau and Gertrude Stein at mention of whom he came attention as stiffly as any English colonel before the Union Jack'. 'Odd Jobs' celebrates the East End diversity vibrancy in life and demonstrating Binder's commitment to Londons working class but inevitably reflects stereotypes of the era. At the same time Binders artwork and words are an evocative documentation of a pre-World War II city that was soon changed forever. She dedicated the book to 'To my friends Professor Bronislaw Malinowsky and Elsie Malinowsky These True Stories'. The daughter of a Jewish Tailor and a mother whose origins are not documented Binder moved to London after World War 1 and studied lithography at the Central School of Art and Design. She both illustrated books for other writers who documented London life and wrote and illustrated her own. She was a great supporter of the Pearlies the working class and womens rights. A very good copy of an exceedingly scarce title and an important book for collectors of London life. I can locate no other copies in commerce. More images available on request. 19465303
Quarto 29.5x21 cm. 81 pp. In unusually fine condition. Nicely preserved. Czech postwar avant-garde. Original mimeograph with illustrations photographs and photomontages. Printed as a manuscript and reproduced thus by Fechtner. A dadaist-spirited anthology of texts viewing the period of German occupation through a prism of nonsense and ridiculing those leading the way towards the bright future. The first doctored photo shows a group of people standing outside a building with a plaque that reads "In this house Pankrac Perla the founder of Recesse Is Still Snowing did not live." Pankrac Perla is the collective pseudonym for the "recessiste" or Mischief-makers an informal student group consisting of Ladislav Rychmann who later directed the first Czech musical Starci na chmelu painter and composer Frantisek Chaun the actor Josef Chvalina film historian and grandson of Jaroslav Vrchlicky Myrtil Frida and translator Jiri Becka among others formed in the late 1930s who drew partly on the humor of writers such as Jaroslav HaÅ¡ek or Jaroslav Zak and partly on dadaism and surrealism. Czech scholars have attributed the influence of the Mischief-makers on the post-war generation of Czech intellectuals. The Czech language is the only language in the world that uses "recession" or economic decline to also mean joking irony and satire and a number of Czech linguists trace this second meaning to the group's creation of a specific type of humor bordering on the edge of slapstick absurdity and nonsense. The first story here Skurda v okupaci Skurda During the Occupation continues the adventures of the group's favorite protagonist Jordan Skurda first introduced in their 1937 novel We're Going to Bodele - Escape from the Sahara. The Mischief-makers were criticized by their elders for attacking authority of all kinds - parents teachers and officials - and the Czech fascist press seized upon their writings and pranks to criticize them as products of the Czechoslovak educational system. Petr Koura Literary noviny. Yet the fascists weren't alone: criticism of the group's influence on the Czech youth and their failure to take art seriously appears in the literary revue Kriticky mÄ›siÄnÃk in 1940. The humor collected in this anthology is unrelenting such as one letter to the Nazi ministry suggesting they ban senior citizens from feeding pigeons and put them to work; musicians too since violinists would could use their arm motions to saw wood with mathematical formulas backing up the claims. Another interesting contribution is the A Moment of Silence for the Final Congress of Coffee Tasters - in memory of the first "Dadaing" of Tristan Tzara - consisting of a three-page play with dadaists on rocking horses. OCLC locates on holding in North America Univ Toronto. Copies of this work when found are usually deteriorated; this copy fine.
Fechtner paperback

Pearl S. Buck b.1892 - d.1973 was the daughter of American missionaries to China and an author whose 1931 novel 'The Good Earth' won the Pulitzer Prize in 1932. In 1938 Buck won the Nobel Prize in Literature "for her rich and truly epic descriptions of peasant life in China" and for her books 'The Exile: Portrait of an American Mother' and 'Fighting Angel: Portrait of a Soul' memoirs about her mother and father respectively.

Buck's life was defined by her advocacy for the people of China and shifting western perceptions about that part of the world. This collection has several items pertaining to her early recognition on the heels of her Pulitzer Prize when a luncheon was held for her in New York at the Hotel Astor in 1932. There she gave her famous speech "Is There a Case for Foreign Missions" At the end the the audience appeared confused and speechless.
