1945002119NY: The John Day Co. 1945. The Chinese art of woodcut printing originated in the Tang Dynasty and reached a pinnacle in the Ming with the invention of multi-colour woodcut printing but it gradually fell into decline by the end of the 19th century. In the 1930's intellectuals such as Lu Xun were exposed to the dramatic woodcuts of the German Expressionist movement and realized that this style was an effective tool to communicate the lives and social ills of the common Chinese citizen during the difficult years of struggle against Japanese imperialism. Thus the 'new' Chinese woodcut style was born. The present volume presents 82 such examples by some forty Chinese artists. Portraying a people living through difficult times yet maintaining their native spirit endurance and humour these prints are a remarkable record of the period. With foreword and commentary on each work by Pearl S. Buck. The box contains an oblong format glossy-wraps exhibit catalog 24 pp. in length and with a full list of the pieces displayed and a Foreword penned by Robert J. Koenig Director of the Gallery. "Clinton Hill Recent Work" is a tall trade softcover format catalog that is augmented with an essay by Stephen Westfall and with another 16 pp. of to-then recent works rendered in full glorious color. A second trade softcover glossy-covers item has been laid in and in another 16 pp. has presented his C.V. Grants and Awards books and articles etc. Each of those items is housed in the heavy cloth clamshell box that is in As New condition. Finally there is a suite of handmade paper in association with John Koller from his mill at Woodstock Connecticut in December of 1976 in an edition of only 25 copies. Fully collectible examples of lovely handmade paper.
