Gussow was a theatre critic and cultural writer for The New York Times from 1969 until his death in 2005. He authored 8 books served as editor for many others and his reviews and interviews with the likes of Arthur Miller Samuel Beckett Harold Pinter and Tom Stoppard became staples of students and fans of theatre for decades. His first published review was Edward Albee's "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf" in 1962 leading to a lifelong relationship with the playwright that resulted in a biography of Albee by Gussow published in 1999. Near Fine in a Very Good plus dust jacket. Light toning to the page edges. Jacket has a bit of rubbing and nicking at the extremities. Several photos of Pearl and Tony are in the book. A book of memoirs. Pearl Mae Bailey 1918 – 1990 was an American actress and singer working in vaudeville and on Broadway. Her Broadway debut was in ‘St. Louis Woman’ in 1946 and she went on to win a Tony Award for the title role in the all-black production of ‘Hello Dolly!’ in 1968. She also enjoyed a successful television career and in 1986 she won a Daytime Emmy award for her performance as a fairy godmother in the ABC Afterschool Special ‘Cindy Eller: A Modern Fairy Tale.’ Miss Bailey and her husband jazz drummer Louie Bellson adopted a son Tony in the mid-1950s and a girl Dee Dee in the early 1960s. The meeting between Pearl her husband jazz drummer Louie Bellson and the infant boy Tony is loving described: “Sunday we took off for this town to get our fine son. There he was this lovely baby boy nineteen months old in just a diaper - not undershirt no shoes - big wondering eyes staring at Louis and me. He might have been wondering if these two folks would leave him stranded later in this big world. Light creasing and wear to edges and folds. <br /> <br /> Dick Cecil former Vice-President of the Atlanta Braves and President of Braves Productions Inc. was one of the last old school baseball scouts in America. Instrumental in moving the Braves from Milwaukee to Atlanta Cecil rose quickly through the ranks of baseball scout to management. Later in his career he was tasked by Ted Turner to find ways for more revenue from the Braves assets. This assignment led to the founding of the Atlanta Jazz Festival and bringing major league soccer to Atlanta Chiefs in 1967. Cecil was a founding member of the North American Soccer League NASL. As if this wasn't enough Dick was known for his support of the desegregation of sports in America at a time when this was less than popular.
