Pietro Piraino Papoff, antiquario, scultore ceroplasta e restauratore, ha ricostruito in questo volume la storia degli usi e delle evoluzioni di questa raffinata declinazione dell'arte figurativa. Arte conosciuta già dagli Egizi e dai Romani, dal 1600 la ceroplastica venne applicata alla riproduzione di modelli scientifici, soprattutto anatomici, garantendo così l'uso di un materiale didattico di impressionante verosimiglianza. Sul finire del 1800 Cesare Lombroso istituì a Torino un museo di psichiatria e criminologia in cui custodire le sue raccolte di reperti, fra le quali spicca quella di maschere di criminali in cera. Ma la lavorazione della cera d'api si è sviluppata anche in campo artistico. Tra gli artisti italiani, Medardo Rosso preferiva la cera per le sue incontestabili caratteristiche di malleabilità e trasparenza. Un percorso secolare, dall'antichità al Novecento, accompagnato da rare immagini di opere in cera custodite da musei e collezioni private di tutto il mondo.
