With its almost 30000 lots this was the largest sale ever held in any country up to 1725 a record not broken until the Thott sale Copenhagen: 1789-1795 and the Heber sales of the 1830s. The Du Bois sale lasted for nearly two months. This extraordinary library was the creation of the AbbÃ© Jean-Paul Bignon 1662-1743 who was for many years secretary of the AcadÃ©mie des Sciences. When in 1718 he was appointed BibliothÃ©caire du Roi a position he occupied until 1741 he sold his library of approximately 50000 volumes in order to avoid a conflict of interest. The buyer was the financier John Law 1671-1729 of â€œMississippi Bubbleâ€ fame. Financial reversals caused Law to almost immediately resell the library for 50000 livres to Cardinal Du Bois 1656-1723 the immensely rich but ill-famed first minister during the minority and under the reign of Louis XV his misdeeds may have been exaggerated by the Duc de Saint-Simon who hated him. Guigard and others state that Lawâ€™s sale of the library took place in 1723 but it cannot have been later than December 1720 when Law secretly left France after the Mississippi Bubble had burst. Following Du Boisâ€™s death the library was sold for 65000 livres to â€œthe booksellers of Parisâ€ who immediately sold it to one â€œGuitonâ€ who in turn sent it to The Hague for auction. This library contained many famous rarities including editiones principes of Aristophanes Homer and Pliny incunabula printed on vellum Spanish romances of chivalry and illuminated manuscripts. Many of the finest books and manuscripts were acquired by a collector named Milsoneau. Johann Wilhelm Friessem junior Each broadside is printed on 2 sheets divided in 8 ad 1 or 12 ads 2 and 3 columns and includes 2 decorated woodcut initials and an ornamental border between the columns. 3 broadsides. Exceptionally rare set of three anti-Jansenist broadsides of which we have not been able to find any other copies in either institutions or on the market. Although they were also published as books in the same year each text was newly typeset for the present broadsides. Despite being anti-Jansenist the works were quite controversial in their own time and even placed onto the Index in 1694 which is likely part of the reason for the extreme scarcity of both the books and broadsides today.The three works were intended as a series as the preface of ad 2 states that it was written because ad 1 had not yet reached its goal of convincing everyone of the heresy of Jansenism. Each work explains in various "gradus" or steps how Jansenism extinguishes the love for God destroys the hierarchy of the Church and turns Catholics away from the Sacraments. Each step then gives a list of Jansenist dogmas and explains why they are heretical. This is followed by a source list at the bottom of the broadside detailing in which Jansenist texts these dogmas can be found. Although the works are extremely scarce today they were known in their own time as they provoked both court trials and/or refutational publications in the very years after publication including Troisième piece du procés de Calomnie contre les auteurs & approbateurs du placard intitulé: Jansenismus omnem destruens religionem 1693 by the famous Jansenist Antoine Arnauld and Responsio . ad accusationes contra se allegatas in libello cui titulus . Jansenismus omnem destruens religionem item Jansenismus plurimas haereses &c. et Jansenismus exotice &c. 1694 by Gommarus Huygens.Although the works were published anonymously the censor mentioned at the bottom of each broadside Nicolas du Bois 1620-1696 was most likely also the author. He studied theology at the University of Leuven and held the position of royal professor of sacred scriptures from 1654 until his death. At the end of the 17th century the Faculty of Theology at Leuven was an important crossroad of both Jansenist and anti-Jansenist ideas. As the head of an anti-Jansenist society Du Bois was a zealous member of the second camp. In 1679 his society sent an agent to Rome with a list of 238 Jansenistic propositions they wanted the Pope to condemn. After a thorough theological examination the list was reduced to 31 propositions which were condemned in 1690. The original list included the source of each entry and a brief commentary in the marginal notes. The present work is presented in a similar way. As such it may have been an attempt by Du Bois and his society to garner support for the condemnation of more propositions.The broadsides are reversibly framed. They have been folded in the past and are unevenly browned lacking the left side of the frame of ad 1 ads 2 and 3 with a restored loss affecting some text. Otherwise in good condition.l Cf. The photos has been mounted firmly glued down on what appear to be white foam board lined around sides and around edges on back with black cloth. An appealing image even though a multitude of crease and wrinkle lines are visible upon close inspection. The photograph shows Du Bois in a light three piece suit and about 40 men almost all of college age seated around tables which have been placed together in the shape of an "A." UMass Amherst has a letter written to Du Bois only 10 days before the banquet from Beta chapter inviting Du Bois an honorary member of Epsilon Chapter at the University of Michigan to attend and speak since they had learned that Du Bois was already scheduled to be in Washington on April 30th. Addison N. Scurlock an African American was generally regarded as the photographer of Black Washington during most of the first half of the 20th century. Scurlock unknown
